讀者王先生問:留學(xué)推薦信重要嗎?應(yīng)該怎么寫?找什么樣的人寫最好?信中應(yīng)該包括什么內(nèi)容?有哪些技巧?
北京威久留學(xué)專家張宏:推薦信可能是所有申請文件中最為重要的一項。推薦信的篇幅一般英文成稿約為300~400字。推薦信最忌諱寫成類似中國教師給學(xué)生寫的評語,每個人都適用。面面俱到,詳略不當(dāng)也是不可取的。此外評價亦忌太過夸張,好似申請人的現(xiàn)有程度已經(jīng)不需要任何進(jìn)修或?qū)ι暾埲说倪^度吹捧使推薦人本身的層次和程度大打折扣。
推薦信寫作應(yīng)注意以下幾點:推薦人最好選擇自己的授課或論文指導(dǎo)教師。當(dāng)然假設(shè)能找到大學(xué)招生負(fù)責(zé)人都認(rèn)可或熟知的推薦人更好,如國際知名學(xué)者教授等。假設(shè)申請人是普通學(xué)生而選擇職位很高的推薦人〔如學(xué)校校長〕,應(yīng)該解釋清楚推薦人是怎樣理解到申請人的。同時在第一段就應(yīng)介紹清楚推薦人和申請人的關(guān)系。
推薦信的核心還是應(yīng)該和申請人的學(xué)業(yè)成績和學(xué)術(shù)才能嚴(yán)密相關(guān),應(yīng)注意與所申請專業(yè)的結(jié)合。如申請管理類課程,勿用大量篇幅描寫輔修計算機的成績,反之亦然。推薦信在提出申請人優(yōu)點時,應(yīng)防止泛泛而談,最好附以詳細(xì)事例,當(dāng)然有數(shù)據(jù)支持更有說服力。如:排名10/200〔200人中前10名〕,多少天完成實驗,成功率如何。另外推薦教師如為論文或畢業(yè)設(shè)計指導(dǎo)教師,可提及論文或畢設(shè)大致情況,來說明被推薦人的研究或理論才能。
申請人其他方面的優(yōu)點,如團(tuán)隊精神,開朗性格、品質(zhì)、對科學(xué)研究的執(zhí)著等也可簡單提及作為補充內(nèi)容,這些是要求一個研究者必備的素質(zhì)。

幾乎所有的大學(xué)都會要求美國留學(xué)申請人提出推薦信〔RemendationLetter〕,評審委員借著推薦者的文字描繪,可以理解申請人的背景狀況。它可說明各種成績單數(shù)字以外的其它意義,補充過于計量化、公式化審核的一種評估方式。美國留學(xué)申請研究所一般要求三封推薦信推薦人的身份可以是曾經(jīng)教你的教授,或是現(xiàn)〔曾〕職工作單位主管,自已視需要組合。例如,假設(shè)你畢業(yè)十年,你的推薦人可應(yīng)有二封工作主管為宜,而畢業(yè)一兩年頂多一封即足夠。推薦人的職務(wù),并不一定愈高愈有利,相反地,認(rèn)識你愈久而職稱不高,內(nèi)容又適當(dāng)?shù)乇磉_(dá)你的個性〔Personality〕,才是上乘的推薦。以下,我們將提供你推薦信需注意的要點,幫助你著手起稿推薦信:〔一〕不要拖時間,盡快起草:推薦信需要時間寫,何況又得配合教師的時間。所以盡快起草你的推薦信,以便使你的推薦者有充裕的時間,為你的推薦信效力?!捕程峁┏浞莸男畔⒔o推薦者:假設(shè)你要推薦者能掌握你的優(yōu)點,你得提供充份的信息。自然,要盡量詳細(xì)防止空洞地陳述。同時,你也該提供你申請學(xué)校截止日期給推薦者參考,以免推薦者耽誤了你的申請?!踩掣魍扑]信的打字書信字體,宜選不同的型式,以示不同的推薦者。屬需要圈選的表格者,可以直接以手稿填入?!菜摹吃谶壿嬐评硐?推薦者不可能知道或理解你的特質(zhì),請勿提及。譬如說,學(xué)生課外活動的表現(xiàn)就不適于平常教授正式科目的教授提及,除非教授也參與其中。又如其它課堂的表現(xiàn),除非其它教授曾經(jīng)提及過,否那么不適宜此科教授評論學(xué)生在其它科目的表現(xiàn)。再如,學(xué)生如何在圖書館查數(shù)據(jù)、寫報告花費的時間,一般教師是不可能知之甚詳,除非實在太特殊而略有耳聞,故也不適宜在推薦信中提及?!参濉惩扑]信的內(nèi)容盡量簡短有力:不要虛無空洞的形容詞,例如他任職于某公司時,勤勞、負(fù)責(zé)、認(rèn)真、為人謙虛、誠懇等語句,不宜多引用,最好講出詳細(xì)事實,才不流于形式,尤其不要抄襲市面的書信范例,以免流于陳腔濫調(diào),落入俗套?!擦臣僭O(shè)可能的話,推薦者最好與你修的科目或?qū)W校相關(guān)。譬如說:假設(shè)你將來方案主修英文,最好推薦人之一是英文教師。又如,假設(shè)你申請常春藤名?!睮VYLEAGUESCHOOL〕,推薦者假設(shè)也是常春藤名校出身,那么其推薦信將更有力?!财摺尺m當(dāng)提及自己的“缺點〞。一封推薦信假設(shè)闡述的完全是被推薦的同學(xué)的優(yōu)點,不免讓人覺得有粉飾之嫌,假設(shè)能恰當(dāng)?shù)貐⒓右恍叭秉c〞,不僅能令推薦信真實,還會通過“似貶實褒〞,反而突出了被推薦人的特殊氣質(zhì)。例如計算機專業(yè)、數(shù)學(xué)專業(yè)乃至金融專業(yè)的同學(xué),在推薦信中可以考慮參加這樣的詞句:“該生有時因為過分專注于研究工作而難以平衡生活各方面的關(guān)系,這不失為一種美中缺乏〞。這句話似乎是在談“缺點〞,但很明顯這樣的“缺點〞其實正是很多專業(yè)最渴望的“缺點〞——廢寢忘食的工作態(tài)度,從而使得“缺點〞也為申請?zhí)峁┝撕甏髱椭?。推薦信包含的主要題材〔一〕與申請者的關(guān)系:表達(dá)清楚何種方式認(rèn)識。譬如說是教師、指導(dǎo)教授,老板等。說明交往多久,假設(shè)是教授學(xué)生關(guān)系,對教授的科目做一個簡短的說明,假設(shè)推薦信者是你的老板〔主管〕,請詳細(xì)說明你的工作職責(zé)。〔二〕推薦者對申請人人格個性特征的印象:譬如學(xué)習(xí)精神、工作態(tài)度、與同事〔同學(xué)〕相處的情形、組織指導(dǎo)才能、學(xué)術(shù)專長、研究才能、有無工作經(jīng)歷與否,并加注評語?!踩惩扑]者對你能否順利完成學(xué)位的看法:譬如說,描繪你對特別分配職務(wù)上的

〔三〕第二段:這段可以提供最本質(zhì)的內(nèi)容。譬如,假設(shè)推薦者是教授,解釋學(xué)生在他門下所修的課程?!?name)tooktwoofmycoursesduringthe1984-85academicyear,asfollows;“xxxxx〞and“xxxxx〞.〞“(Name)waseolledinthreeofclassesfromSeptember1984toJune1986“xxx〞and“xxx〞.〞接下來,教授寫一些有關(guān)申請人在課堂上的表現(xiàn),如完成的研究方案、實驗室研究、研究報告、考試的成績、課堂態(tài)度、討論課的參與等,舉出實例?!癐nmyclass(es),(name)didexcellentwork.Shealwayslistenedattentively,participatedactivitelyinclass,andhandedinverygoodwrittenassignment.“Inparticular,his/herresearchpaperon(topic)wasofexceptionallyhighquality,andshowedthats/hefullyunderstandsandhasastrongbackgroundinhis/herfield.〞假設(shè)推薦人是工作主管,首先一定要仔細(xì)陳述申請人的工作職責(zé),并對申請者工作表現(xiàn)作一評估。假設(shè)可能的話盡量列舉實例?!癢hen(name)heldthepositionof(jobtitle)inthispanyshewasones/hewasoneofmybestemployees.His/herjobresponsibilitiesincluded(describethem),ands/hecarriedouthis/herdutieswithexceptionalskillandprofessionalism.〞“S/henotonlydidhis/herownwork,butalsohelpedotheremployees,andmademanyvaluablecontributionstotheefficientrunningtoourfirm.〞第二段最后一段:可以提及申請人在班上〔或公司里〕的比擬表現(xiàn)〔譬如排名〕:“Iwasrate(name)'sacademicabilityasinthetop10%ofhis/herclass.〞“paredagainstotherstudentsthatIhavetaught,Iwouldsaythat(name)ranksintheupper10%.接下來,推薦者可對申請人能否成功完成學(xué)業(yè)提出看法。舉例:“Basedonhis/herpreviousperformance,Iamcertainthat(name)wouldbeaverysuccessfulstudentatyouruniversity.〞“Ibelievethat(name)possessesallthequalitiesnecessarytomakeanexcellentgraduatestudentinhis/herchosenfield,andamsurethats/hewillmakeafineadditiontoyourcampus.〞〔四〕第三段:假設(shè)還有其它話想說,請另寫一段.例如:英文才能、溝通技巧、指導(dǎo)才能、特殊學(xué)術(shù)或工作背景。譬如說,假設(shè)申請人欲申請的科系是企管系,推薦者可著力描寫他們有關(guān)申請人商業(yè)的專門技術(shù)、指導(dǎo)才能,以及申請者所參加的商業(yè)活動,例如,有關(guān)商業(yè)方面的組織社團(tuán)。又如,申請人申請護(hù)理研究所,推薦者可著力描寫他們關(guān)心的態(tài)度、處理實驗室的技能,或是對病人的奉獻(xiàn)?!参濉匙詈?以幾句結(jié)尾作總結(jié);“Therefore,Iamhappytohighlyandwithoutreservationremend(name)foradmissiontoyourgraduateprogram.Yourkind/seriousconsiderationofhis/herapplicationwouldbemostappreciated.〞“Iamthuspleasedtogivemyfullsupportandremendationto(name)'s
