OneofthepeculiaritiesoftheEasternbazaaristhatshopkeepersdealinginthesamekindof

Perhapsthemostunforgettablethinginthebazaar;apartfromitsgeneralatmosphere,is

theplacewheretheymakelinseedoil.Itisavast,sombrecavernofaroom,somethirtyfeethigh

andsixtyfeetsquare,andsothickwiththedustofcenturiesthatthemudbrickwallsandvaulted

roofareonlydimlyvisible.Inthiscavernarethreemassivestonewheels,eachwithahugepole

throughitscentreasanaxle.Thepoleisattachedattheoneendtoanuprightpost,around

whichitcanrevolve,andattheothertoablind-foldedcamel,whichwalksconstantlyinacircle,

providingthemotivepowertoturnthestonewheel.Thisrevolvesinacircularstonechannel,

intowhichanattendantfeedslinseed.Thestonewheelcrushesittoapulp,whichisthenpressed

toextracttheoil.ThecamelsarethelargestandfinestIhaveeverseen,andinsuperbcondition-
