ThesmallerthePMis,thelongeritcanstayintheair.Andthelongeritfloats,thefartheritcantravel.TheespeciallyworrisomesizesareknownasPM2.5.Thesebitsarenomorethan2.5micrometerswide.That’saboutone-thirtieththewidthofahumanhair.Theseaerosolsaresosmallthattheycanbebreatheddeeplyintothelungs.PM2.5hasbeenlinkedwithbreathing-relatedinjuryandheartdisease.

Overthelastfewdecades,USclean-airlawshavesetlimitsonemissions(排放)ofPMfromindustrialsources.Thathashelpedcleantheairinmanycities.Buttheserulesdon’tcoverPMfromwildfiresmoke.Recentstudieshaveshownthataerosolsfromwildfiresmaybemorepoisonousthanindustrialsourcesofthesepollutants.
