3I’vespentfouryearsfollowinglibrariansastheydealwiththetremendousincreasein
informationandthemanywayswereceiveit.They’vebeenadaptingascapablyas
anyprofession,managingourpubliccomputersandservinggrowingnumbersof
patrons,butitseemsthattheirworkhasbeenallbutinvisibletothoseinpower.I’ve
talkedtolibrarianswhosejobshaveexpandedwiththedemandforcomputersand
training,andbecausesomanyothergovernmentservicesarebeingcut.Thepeople
leftinthelurchhavelookedtothelibrary,wherekind,knowledgeableprofessionals
helpthemnavigatethegovernmentbureaucracy,applyforbenefits,accesssocial
services.Publicofficialswilltellyoutheylovelibrariesandarecommittedtothem;
theyjustdon’tbelievetheyconstitutea“core”service....
4Thepeoplewhowelcomeustothelibraryareidealists,whobelievethataccurate
informationleadstogooddecisionsandthatexposuretotheintellectualrichesof
civilizationleadstoabetterworld.ThenextAbrahamLincolncouldbesittingin
theirlibrary,teachinghimselfallheneedstoknowtosavethecountry.Whilethey
