4Typically,theinterpretationofaproxyclimaterecordiscomplicatedbythepresenceof"noise"inwhichtheclimateinformationisimmersedwithavarietyofpossibledistortionsoftheunderlyingclimateinformation.Carefulcalibrationandcross-validationproceduresarenecessarytoestablishareliablerelationshipbetweenaproxyclimateindicatorandtheclimaticvariablestodetermineanappropriate"transfer"functionthroughwhichpastclimaticconditionscanbeestimated.High-resolutionproxyclimateindicators,includingtreerings,corals,icecores,andlaminatedlake/oceansediments,canbeusedtoprovidedetailedinformationonannualornear-annualclimatevariationsbackintime.Certaincoarserresolutionproxyinformation(frome.g.boreholes,glacialmoraines,andnon-laminatedoceansedimentrecords)canusefullysupplementthishigh-resolutioninformation.
