Shakespeare’swritingcareermayberoughlydividedintofourstages:

Intheearlyyears,Shakespearewrotehisearlyhistoryplays.TheyareHenryVIinthreeparts,RichardIII,criticizingfeudallordsforinitiatingcivilwarandreflectingthepublic’sdesiretounifythecountryandstabilizethepoliticalsituation.

Thesecondperiodisaperiodofrapidgrowthanddevelopment.Inthisperiod,hiscomedies,amongwhichthewell-knownareAMidsummerNight’sDream,TheMerchantofVeniceandAsYouLikeIt,eulogizeloveandfriendship,affirmhumanwisdomandstrength,anddemonstratethevitalityofhumanism.

Thethirdperiodisaperiodofgloomanddepression.Inthisperiod,histragedies,amongwhichthewell-knownareHamlet,Othello,KingLearandMacbeth,depicttheintenseconflictandcontradictionbetweenpersonalidealandsocialreality.

Thefourthperiodisaperiodofrestoredserenity.SuchplaysasTheTempestwaswritteninthisperiod.
