OncewhenIwassixyearsoldIsawamagnificentpictureinabook,calledTrueStoriesfromNature,abouttheprimevalforest.Itwasapictureofaboaconstrictorintheactofswallowingananimal.Hereisacopyofthedrawing.

Inthebookitsaid:"Boaconstrictorsswallowtheirpreywhole,withoutchewingit.Afterthattheyarenotabletomove,andtheysleepthroughthesixmonthsthattheyneedfordigestion."

Ipondereddeeply,then,overtheadventuresofthejungle.AndaftersomeworkwithacoloredpencilIsucceededinmakingmyfirstdrawing.MyDrawingNumberOne.Itlookedsomethinglikethis:

Ishowedmymasterpiecetothegrownups,andaskedthemwhetherthedrawingfrightenedthem.

Buttheyanswered:"Frighten?Whyshouldanyonebefrightenedahat?"

Mydrawingwasnotapictureofahat.Itwasapictureofaboaconstrictordigestinganelephant.SothenImadeanotherdrawingoftheinsideoftheboaconstrictor,sothatthegrownupscouldseeitclearly.Theyalwaysneedtohavethingsexplained.MyDrawingNumberTwolookedlikethis:

Thegrownups'response,thistime,wastoadvisemetolayasidemydrawingsofboaconstrictors,whetherfromtheinsideortheoutside,anddevotemyselfinsteadtogeography,history,arithmetic,andgrammar.Thatiswhy,attheageofsix,Igaveupwhatmighthavebeenamagnificentcareerasapainter.IhadbeendisheartenedthefailureofmyDrawingNumberOneandmyDrawingNumberTwo.Grownupsneverunderstandanythingthemselves,anditistiresomeforchildrentobealwaysandforeverexplainingthingstothem.

SothenIchoseanotherprofession,andlearnedtopilotairplanes.Ihaveflownalittleoverallpartsoftheworld;anditistruethatgeographyhasbeenveryusefultome.AtaglanceIcandistinguishChinafromArizona.Ifonegetslostinthenight,suchknowledgeisvaluable.

ThusIhavelivedmylifealone,free,andwithoutties;andithasalwaysseemedtomethatthiswasthewaythatwisemenoughttolive.Butwithoneexception.Ihavehadagreatmanyfriendsinmylife.And,ofallthese,Ihavelostcontactwithonlyone.Ilosthimonanasteroid,B612.Itissuchalittleplanetthat,withathreehundredandfiftydegreepowertelescope,onemightseeitfromtheEarth.Onenight,Ihavewatchedit,withmylittletelescope,andhavesaidtomyself:"SomewherethereisamanwhomIknowwell.Whenheishappy,hehasastarthatnevergoesout."

Then,withoutmakinganyfurthereffortsonthememoryofthegrownups,Isaidtomyself:"Grownupsarecertainlyaltogetherextraordinary."But,ifIhadtochoosebetweenthemandthelittleprince,Ishouldhavechosenthelittleprince.

Thegrownupscalledme"thelittleprince."AndIcertainlywasaprince.TheplanetthatIcamefromisAsteroidB612.Ihavegoodreasontobelievethatitisthesmallestplanetintheentiresolarsystem.ThatiswhyIhavegoodreasontobecalleda"little"prince.AndIhavegoodreasontobeveryproudofmyplanet.Itisjustbigenoughforme.Ihavenoroomtowalkaboutonit.ImuststaywhereIamhopping.Buttobeperfectlytruthful,itisnotverytiringbecause,afterall,itissmallenoughtojumpfromoneendtotheotherinthreesteps.WhenIgetupinthemorning,Itakethreeleapstotheright,andwhenIgotobedintheevening,Itakethreeleapstotheleft.Inthatway,Ivisitthewholeplanetinaday.AndIamnottiredintheleast.

Iwasveryfondoftherosethatwasmyfriend.Icouldnotpossiblyendurethethoughtofherbeingliketheothers.Forshewasmyrose.AnditwasbecauseshewasmyrosethatIlovedher.

Ilearnedthisfromthelittleprince.Hewastheonewhotaughtmetolookatthingswithmyheart.Andhewastheonewhotaughtmethatthemostbeautifulthingsintheworldarethosethatcanonlybeseenwiththeheart.

Ihaveneverforgottenthelittleprince.Heisalwayswithme,evennow,asIwritethesewords.Icanseehiminmymind,justasclearlyasifhewerestandingrightinfrontofme.AndIcanhearhisvoice,justasclearlyasifhewerespeakingtomerightnow.

Iwouldliketosharewithyouthestoryofthelittleprince.Itisastoryofloveandfriendship.Itisastoryoflossandhope.Itisastorythatwilltouchyourheart,justasittouchedmine.

So,letusbegin.Letusbeginwiththelittleprinceandhisjourneyfromhisasteroid,B612,totheEarth.
