OdetoNightingaleF.ScottFitzgeraldHewasanAmericanauthorofnovelsandshortstories,whoseworksaretherepresentativewritingsoftheJazzAge.Fitzgeraldisconsideredamemberofthe"LostGeneration"ofthe1920s.Hefinishedfournovels:ThisSideofParadise,TheBeautifulandDamned,TheGreatGatsby(hismostfamous),andTenderIstheNight.Afifth,unfinishednovel,TheLoveoftheLastTycoon,waspublishedposthumously.Fitzgerald'sworkhasbeenadaptedintofilmsmanytimes.TheGreatGatsbyhasbeenthebasisfornumerousfilmsofthesamename,spanningnearly90years;1926,1949,1974,2000,and2013adaptations.Inaddition,Fitzgerald'sownlifefrom1937to1940wasdramatizedin1958inBelovedInfidel.DickDiverwasapromisingpsychiatristinanasyluminZurichinSwitzerland.TherehewasattractedbyawealthyandprettypatientNicoleWarren,whowastangledintheproblemofincestwithherfather.Atthatmoment,hersisterBabydecidedtobuyNicoleadoctor,asthefunctionofhusband.DickseizedthechanceandlatermarriedNicole.Thecoupleledaleisurelyandsumptuouslife,bytravellingaroundtheEurope,andmadefriendswithdifferentpeople,suchasTommyBarban,AbeandMaryNorth.Besides,DickalsotriedhisbesttocureNicole,butsharpconflict,betweenhimandNicole,especiallydifferenceintheirvalues—NicolealwayswantedtocontrolDickandseducedhimintoalifeofcorruption—graduallyappearedandaggravatedThenonabeachofFrance,theymetRosemary,ayounglovelyHollywoodactress.DickandRosemarysoonfellintolove.ButlatertheypartedbecauseofNicole’smentaldiseaserelapse.Fouryearslater,DickreturnedtoAmericatoattendhisfather’sfuneral,andmetRosemaryagain.However,thistimehefeltdisappointedtowardsRosemaryandtotallylosthopeforhislove.HewentbacktoNicole,andbecameunpopularamonghisfriendsbecauseofaddictiontoalcoholism.WhileDick’lifesankintocrisis,Nicolebecamestrongerandstrongerdaybyday.ShetransferredheraffectiontoTommyBarban,wholovedherfromtheverybeginning.Atlast,NicoleleftDickandremarriedTommy.AsforDick,heshunnedthoseoldfriendsandreturnedtoAmerica.Hemovedfromonesmalltowntoanother,hereto,hiscareerandhisdreamwerecompletelydiscardedanddestroyed....herfacecouldhavebeendescribedintermsofconventionalprettiness,buttheeffectwasthatithadbeenmadefirstontheheroicscalewithstrongstructureandmarking,asifthefeaturesandvividnessofbrowandcoloring,everythingweassociatewithtemperamentandcharacterhadbeenmoldedwithaRodinesque(具有羅丹或其作品的特色的)intention,andthenchiseled(鑿)
awayinthedirectionofprettinesstoapointwhereasingleslipwouldhaveirreparablydiminisheditsforceandquality.Withthemouththesculptorhadtakendesperatechances---itwasthecupid'sbrowofamagazinecover,yetitsharedthedistinctionoftherestExcerptsfromthisbookDicktriedtodissect(仔細(xì)分析)itintopiecessmallenoughtostoreaway---realizingthatthetotalityofalifemaybedifferentinqualityfromitssegments,andalsothatlifeduringthefortiesseemedcapableofbeingobservedonlyinsegments.HisloveforNicoleandRosemary,hisfriendshipwithAbeNorth,withTommyBarbaninthebrokenuniverseofthewar'sending---insuchcontactsthepersonalitieshadseemedtopressupsoclosetohimthathebecamethepersonalityitself---thereseemedsomenecessityoftakingallornothing;itwasasiffortheremainderofhislifehewascondemnedtocarrywithhimtheegosofcertainpeople,earlymetandearlyloved,andtobeonlyascompleteastheywerecompletethemselves.Therewassomeelementoflonelinessinvolved---soeasytobeloved---sohardtolove.AnalysationDickDiver:Heistheprotagonistinthisnovelwhowasbroughtupinamiddleclassfamily.In1917,hearrivedinZurichwithanambitiousheartandapromisingprospect,aimingtobecomeaworldfamouspsychiatrist.Atthisverymoment,hewashandsome,gracious,genteel,andvigorous.Hehadastrongbeliefinpuritancode—workhardandgainsuccess.Unfortunatelyhelovedandmarriedthewrongperson,hispatient.MaybehehimselfcouldnottellwhatcharacteristicsNicolehadattractedhimmore.Herincomparablebeauty?Orherfabulouswealth?Hesankintothistendertrap,sinceitwashardforpeopletogetridofhumannaturalweakness.Throughthismarriage,heobtainedmoneyandwoman,buthealsolosthisindependenceandcalmness.Hestruggledtoremainfinancialindependence,butthegapoftheirincomeswastoogreat.Hisearningsweremerelyenoughfortrifles,forhisclothes.Whenhewentoutalone,hedrankbadwine,andtriedtoreduceexpenses.Butactuallythoseeffortswereinvain.HewasstillshadowedbyNicole.Forinstance,whenFranz,anotherdoctor,putforwardtheplantobuyaclinictogetherwithDick,thoughDickwasalittlebitinterestedinit,hehadtosuccumbtoBabyandNicole,forhehadnomoney.HemanagedtointrigueBaby’sinteresttowardsit,andfinallyBabythoughtitwasgoodanddecidedtobuyhimthisclinic.Dickoncesaid,“NicoleandBabyarerichasCroesusbutIhaven’tmanagedtogetmyhandsonanyofityet.”O(jiān)bviously,itcouldnotbetrue.Itwashisfainthopetobefinancialindependence.Theirtravellingexpenses,theclinicalcost,andotherfeeswerefarbeyondhiscapacity.Takeanotherexample.WhenDickwasthrownintojailwhileintoxicatedinItaly,hehadnootherchoicesbuttoaskforBabyforhelp.ThesetwosistersluredDickwithmoneyandcharm,andDickgraduallyneglectedhiscareerandmedicalresearch.Asforthisaspect,hewasnaive,flippantandweak.SoheturnedtoRosemary,buthisillusiontowardsheralsodied,assoonashefoundoutshewasnotasinnocentasshelooked.Dick’sfailurerevealedhisownweaknessaswellassocialevils.Helongedforfortuneandsuccess,andthoughtonedayhewouldedgehimselfintotheupperclass.Buthewassofeeblethathadnostrengthandpowertofightagainsttemptation(andhisfate).HislifealreadywentastraywhenhedeterminedtobetheverydoctorthatwouldbeboughtbytheWarrens1920sistheso-calledroaringgeneration.Thisageisbrimmingwithclamor,flippancy,pompandcorruption.FitzgeralddepictedDick’spersonaldissolutionanddeclineandthusexpressedhisunderstandingofdisillusionmentofAmericanDream.SotobetterunderstanddisillusionmentofAmericanDream,we’resupposedtolearnsomeknowledgeofthisnotion.WhatistheAmericanDream?Itisabeliefthatpeoplewillliveabetterlifethroughworkinghard.Andabetterlifemeansnotonlyeconomicboom,butalsospiritualsalvation.Butpeopleoftenlayexcessiveemphasisonmaterialwealth.TheybelieveiftheyachievesuccessthentheyareGod’schosenones.ThisiscloserelatedtotheAmericanhistory.WhenthefirstEuropeanimmigrantsmovedtothenewlandseekingforreligionfreedom,theyheldthedreamofbuildingacityuponthehill.AndespeciallyafterthevictoryofAmericanIndependenceWar,theysuddenlyfacedavastlandinthiscontinent.Americans,thereupon,movedtowardstheWest.Exploitingneededalotofcourage,creativity,persistenceanddetermination,andthenAmericanDreamprevailed.BythetimeoftheIndustrialRevolution,thepopulationdoubledoreventripled,theeconomyflourishe
