1921

college

he

published

his

earliest

spent

few

years

France

studying

literature

late

1940s.

returned

to

China

after

graduation

gave

all

his

attention

effort

to

translation.

Xu

was

the

first

Chinese

to

translate

Chinese

poems

into

English

and

French

in

rhyme

put

life

translation

for

more

than

60

years.

him,

literature
