Dr.Postolache'sresearchteamattheUniversityofMarylandwasthefirsttoreportaconnectionbetweenT.gondiiandsuicidalbehaviorin2009.HeiscooperatingwithresearchersinDenmark,GermanyandSwedentoconfirmandinvestigatethewayleadingtothisassociation.

TheT.gondiiparasitethrivesintheintestinesofcats,anditisspreadthroughtheirwaste.Allwarm-bloodedanimalscanbecomeinfectedthroughcontactwithit.Humanscanbecomeinfectedbychangingtheirinfectedcats'litterboxes,eatingunwashedvegetables,drinkingwaterfromapollutedsource,orbyeatingundercookedorrawmeat.

Notwashingkitchenknivesafterpreparingrawmeatbeforehandlinganotherfooditemalsocanleadtoinfection.Pregnantwomencanpasstheparasitedirectlytotheirunbornbabiesandareadvisednottochangecatlitterboxestoavoidpossibleinfection.

Babiesdon'tproduceantibodiestoT.gondiiforthreemonthsaftertheyareborn,sotheantibodiespresentintheirbloodrepresentedinfectioninthemothers.ThescientistsstudiedDanishhealthpatientstodetermineifanyofthesewomenlaterattemptedsuicide,includingcasesofviolentsuicideattemptswhichmayhaveinvolvedguns,sharpinstrumentsandjumpingfromhighplaces.
