practical.From1927to1931,laborersconstructedmorethan10majornaturalgas

transmissionsystemsintheUnitedStates,makingnaturalgasaviableenergysourcefor

manyapplications.Theoilshortagesofthelate1960sandearly1970sbroughtrenewed

interestinnaturalgasasafuelsource,especiallyforautomobiles.Today,ownersof

natural-gasvehiclescanfilluptheircarsatoneof1,30。fuelingstationslocatedinthe

UnitedStates.Hondaalsooffersapersonalnaturalgaspumptopeoplewhopurchaseits

natural-gas-poweredCivic.Thepumpusesahome'sexistingnaturalgaslinesandcanbe

installedfor$500to$1.500.Natural-gasvehicledesignNatural-gasvehiclesusethe

samebasicprinciplesasgasoline-poweredvehicles.Inotherwords,thefuel(naturalgas

inthiscase)ismixedwithairinthecylinderofafour-strokeengineandthenignitedbya

sparkplugtomoveapiston(活塞)upanddown.Althoughtherearesomedifferences

betweennaturalgasandgasolineintermsofflammabilityandignitiontemperatures,
