Now new research suggests that some dreams may result from the brains effort to keep learning, even as we sleep. In a study in Boston,100 volunteers were trained for an hour on a maze(迷宮). They tried to find their way through the difficult puzzle as quickly as possible. Then half of the volunteers were allowed to sleep for 90 minutes. The other half stayed awake, reading or relaxing. The ones who slept were asked to describe their dreams when they woke up. After the rest, the volunteers were asked again to solve the maze. Those who hadnt slept showed no improvement or did even worse after the break. Sleepers who didnt report any mazerelated dreams did better but showed only a little improvement. However, four naptakers who reported dreaming about the maze showed a surprising improvement. They scored 10 times higher after sleeping and dreaming about the maze. Even though the number of dreamers was small, the researchers noted that the gap in learning between the dreamers and nondreamers was so wide that the finding was significant(有意義的). The dreamers had all performed poorly on the test before dreaming about it. That suggests that struggling with a task might be the trigger that leads the sleeping brain to focus on it and work on how to deal with it. “Its almost as if your brain is going through everything that happened today,” Dr Stickgold, a scientist at Harvard Medical School, said. ”The things youre obsessed(迷住) with are the ones that your brain forces you to continue to do with. ”28. What were the volunteers asked to do after the rest?A. To work on a new maze. B. To continue to do the maze. C. To talk with each other about their dreams. D. To tell what they thought about the maze. 29. According to the study, which group showed the greatest improvement?A. Those who didnt sleep. B. Those who slept but didnt dream. C. Dreams and HealthDOne cold day in winter, my wife and I were walking back home from the grocery store as usual when we suddenly decided to walk into a coffee shop. My wife ordered a coffee at the counter. Just then, I saw a young woman in her thirties helping with a rather weak Mexican woman into the shop. Maybe it was the gentleness of their difficult experiences or an unclear familiarity with the situation that drew my full attention. I immediately had a strong wish to do something for them. Unfortunately, before I could think of anything reasonable to say, they left the coffee shop without ordering anything! When my wife returned, I told her about the two women and said, “I missed the chance to do something for them.” Strangely enough, though, they came back into the same coffee shop five minutes later. Unbelievable! “This is my chance,” I thought out loud as my wife shared some creative possibilities. The two women ordered, took their place card and left the counter. After quickly finishing our coffee, we walked up to the counter and asked the smiling cashier, “What is your most popular dessert?” “Chocolate Cake,” she answered. With a childlike feeling of happiness, my wife made an unusual order. “Can I buy a chocolate cake for the two women who were here just before us? But dont tell them it is from us. Just give them this card,” she said while taking out a smile card. The cashier couldnt believe it. “Do you do this all the time?” she asked. “Not all the time, but just whenever the heart calls for it,” I answered with a natural smile. We, my wife and I, are people of middle income. That night, we had planned to have our onceinawhile dinner at a restaurant. But walking out of that coffee shop, both of us stood upright and said, “Lets eat at home today.” Its more filling(能填飽肚子的) to give a chocolate cake than to eat it. 32. For those who have tried and failed, success seems difficult to understand. 36 Know your values. Finding your values is in line with creating motivation. 37 Pick a handful of things and write them down. Remind yourself of your values every day and reflect on whether you are honoring those values through your work. Pick a goal and focus on it. Choose one goal to start something large enough that will give you a sense of achievement, while adjusting well to your values. Focus is key here. 38 If you perform many tasks at a time, you might never finish your projects because they will take far too long. Set a time for success. Set a date for success. Know when you hope to realize your goal. 39 By setting a time limit, you are making the process realistic. 40 Failure cant be avoided when you take risks. By its very definition, the desire to succeed means you are risking failure. Many people tend to give up far too early. Dont fall into this trap! Use failure. Treat it as a good thing, and go on. A. The more focused you are on one goal, the higher chance you have of success. B. Make the right decision. C. I have made a list of four habits to help you set goals and realize them. D. Dont give up because of failure. E. Keep it realistic, while not giving you too much time. F. Sit and reflect on what you value most. G.
