icannotimagineanythingmoreexhilaratingthantostandherethisevening–alsoonbehalfofmycolleaguesw.e.moernerandericbetzig–thankingtheswedishacademyandthenobelfoundationforthehonorthathasbeenbestoweduponus.wearesogratefultoallwhohavesupportedusonourpathand–aboveall–wefeelvery,veryhumbled.

likealllaureates,eachofusthreehashisownroadtothismagnificenthall.ourpersonalstorieshavebeenquitedifferent.

yet–wehavemuchincommon:passionforwhatwedo,andfascinationwiththingsthatcannotbedone,or–let’ssay–thingsthatcannotbedone...supposedly.

erwinschr?dinger,whospokeatthisbanqueteighty-oneyearsagotonight,wrote:“itisfairtostatethatwearenotgoingtoexperimentwithsingleparticlesanymorethanwewillraisedinosaursinthezoo”.

well,oneofus,w.e.,discoveredjusttheopposite–singlemoleculescanindeedbeseenandplayedwithindividually.

now,ladiesandgentlemen,whatdowelearnfromthis?

first.erwinschr?dingerwouldneverhavegoneontowrite“jurassicpark”...

second.asanobellaureateyoushouldsay“thisorthatisnevergoingtohappen”,becauseyouwillincreaseyourchancestremendously–ofbeingremembered–decadeslater–inanobelbanquetspeech.

andso,–ontosuperresolutionfluorescenceimaging.accordingtothebelief,moleculesclosertogetherthan200nanometerscouldnotbetoldapartwithfocusedlight.thisisbecause,inapackedmolecularcrowd,themoleculesshoutouttheirfluorescencesimultaneously,causingtheirsignal,theirvoices,tobeconfused.

so,whatdoesittake,ladiesandgentlemen,toendupstandinghere,tellingyouastoryofimportantdiscoveriesorimprovements?

well...youdefinitelyneedalivingroom.attheveryleast,youneedaplacetosleep.andwhenyoufallasleepyoumayforgetthatothersconsideryou–toodaringortoofoolish.

butwhenmorningcomes,youwouldbetterfindyourselfsaying:“ihavesomanychoicesofwhattodoorwhattoleave–everymorning,everyday.ibetterjudgeformyself,and–goaheadanddoit.”

becausenothingismorepowerfulthananideawhosetimehascome–evenifitcameina–livingroom–ortosomeone–withahumbleliving.

onbehalfofmycolleaguesmay-brittandedvardmoser,andmyself,iwouldliketoexpressourgratitudetothenobelfoundationforhostingthismagnificentbanquet.iwouldalsoliketoexpressourgratitudetothenobelcommitteeandassemblyfordeemingourresearchworthyofthisdistinguishedaccolade.ithinkit’sfairtosaythatthenobelprizeisthehighesthonoranyscientistorartistcanachieve.wearepleasedanddelighted.

weseetheawardsasarecognitionnotonlyofourselvesandouraccomplishmentsbutalsoofourcollaboratorsinthestudyofthespatialfunctionsofthehippocampus,andourcolleaguesinthewiderfieldofcognitiveandbehaviouralneuroscience.cognitiveneuroscienceisenteringanexcitingerainwhichnewtechnologiesandideasaremakingitpossibletostudytheneuralbasisofcognition,perception,memoryandemotionatthelevelofnetworksofinteractingneurons,thelevelatwhichwebelievemanyoftheimportantoperationsofthebraintakeplace.weknowaconsiderableamountabouthowindividualneuronsworkandhowtwocellscancommunicatewitheachotherbutthewayinwhichentirenetworksofhundredsandthousandsofneuronscooperate,interactwitheachother,andareorchestratedtocreateourideasandconceptsisanunderexploredareaofneuroscience.itisprobablyatthislevelthatnetworkfailureoccursandleadstosomeofourmostdisturbingandintractablediseasesofthemindandbrain.

thisnewareaofneurosciencehasbeenmadepossiblebythedevelopmentofnewoptical,computer-basedelectronic,andmolecularbiologicaltoolswhichwillallowustomonitortheactivityofmanythousandsofcellssimultaneouslyandtomanipulatetheiractivity.wewillmovefromlookingatcorrelationsbetweenbrainactivityandbehaviourtostudyinghowthebraincausesmentalstatesandbehaviour.itisfittingthereforethatourfellowlaureatesthisyearinphysicsandchemistryareworld’sleadersinprovidinguswithsomeofthesetools.weareeagertobegintousesomeofthelaser-basedopticaltechniquesbeingdevelopedbyourchemistryco-laureates.

wearealsopleasedtobereceivingtheprizewithlaureatesfromsomanydifferentcountries.scienceisthequintessentialinternationalendeavourandthesterlingreputationofthenobelawardsispartlyduetothewidely-perceivedlackofnationalandotherbiasesintheselectionofthelaureates.webelievethatthefuturegreatcontributionstoourunderstandingofthebiologicalandphysicalworldcancomefromcitizensofanycountryinanypartoftheworld.itistothecreditofthenobelcommitteesthattheyhavesteadfastlyendeavouredtofollowalfrednobel’swishesthattheprizesrecognisecontributionstothewelfareofhumanityregardlessofcountryoforigin,gender,raceorreligiousaffiliation.

thankyouverymuch,lordlevy,foryourextremelykindintroductionand,tolionel,forgivingyourtimetoentertainusthisevening.iimaginethiscrowdisalotrowdierthanwhatyouwillhaveatglastonbury.

ladiesandgentlemen,thankyouforinvitingmetojoinyouthiseveningforyourbirthdaycelebrations.nearlytwohundredyearsago,in1819,thereweretwoquitemonumentalbirths.thefirstwasmonumentalformyfamily–thebirthofmygreat,great,great,greatgrandmother,queenvictoria,whowentontolive81yearsandwhosedaughter-in-law,alexandra,gavehernametothisamazingbuilding.

thesecondremarkablebirthwasofanorganisation,whichlaterbecameknownasthejewishblindsociety.overthenexttwocenturies,theworldchangedconsiderably.yettherehasalwaysbeenoneconstantintheunitedkingdom–ajewishcommunitywhichhasorganiseditselftosupportthosewhoneedhelpandsupport.whetherinthetimeofthejewishboardofguardians,orthejewishwelfareboardor,inourgeneration,jewishcare,thereisaproudstorytobetoldofself-relianceandcommunalresponsibility.

thiscommonthreadthroughhistory–ofcaringforoneanotherandgenerosityoftimeandmoney–issomethingthatmanysectorsofbritishsocietycanberightlyproudof.butyouinthisroomdeserveparticularpraise.theresultsofyourcommitmenttooneanotherwithinthejewishcommunityareobvious–therealandlovingcarethatthousandsofelderlyandvulnerablepeoplereceive,amongthemanyworksthatyoucarryout.

yourcareforoneanotherhasanother,lesstangiblevalue.duringayearwhenmanyinthejewishcommunityhavehadcausetofeelunderthreat,fornoreasonotherthansimplythefactofyourjewishness,yourunityisallthemoreprecious.yourcommitmentandloyaltytooneanother,andtosocietymorewidely,isultimatelywhatkeepsyoustrong.

iwasremindedbeforeicameheretonightthatanancestorofmine,apreviousdukeofcambridgeinfact,visitedthegreatsynagogueinlondonin1809andattendedasabbathservicetherewithhisbrothers.

itisamatterofgreatpridethatthesebondsinoursocietyrunasdeepastheyrunlong.

yourcareforoneanotherisnotjustafeeling,butitis–asweareremindedtonight–amaterialfact.iknowthatjewishcareisviewedasaleaderinthesocialcarefieldandusesitsknowledge,expertiseandexperiencetoengageinthedebateonhigh-qualitycare,especiallyinrelationtodementia.

yourholocaustsurvivorscentreisasecondhomeformanypeoplewhowereliberated70yearsagofromthoseevilplaces.

sowe’vegotunfinishedworkoverseas,butwe’vegotsomeunfinishedworkrighthereathome.(applause.)aftertheworsteconomiccrisissincethegreatdepression,ourbusinesseshavenowcreated10millionnewjobsoverthelast54months.thisisthelongestuninterruptedstretchofjobgrowthinourhistory.(applause.)inourhistory.butweunderstandourworkisnotdoneuntilwegetthekindofjobcreationthatmeanseverybodywhowantsworkcanafindjob.

we’vedonesomeworkonhealthcare,too.idon’tknowifyou’venoticed.thankstotheaffordablecareact,we’veseena26percentdeclineintheuninsuredrateinamerica.(applause.)africanamericanshaveseena30percentdecline.and,bytheway,thecostofhealthcareisn’tgoingupasfastanymoreeither.everybodywaspredictingthiswasallgoingtobesoexpensive.we’vesaved$800billion--(applause)--inmedicarebecauseoftheworkthatwe’vedone--slowingthecost,improvingquality,andimprovingaccess.despiteunyieldingopposition,thischangehashappenedjustinthelastcoupleyears.

butweknowourworkisnotyetdoneuntilwegetintomorecommunities,helpmoreuninsuredfolksgetcovered,especiallyinthosestateswherethegovernorsaren’tbeingquiteascooperativeaswe’dlikethemtobe.(applause.)youknowwhoyouare.italwayspuzzlesmewhenyoudecidetotakeastandtomakesurepoorfolksinyourstatecan’tgethealthinsuranceeventhoughitdoesn’tcostyouadime.thatdoesn’tmakemuchsensetome,butiwon’tgoononthattopic.(applause.)we’vegotmoreworktodo.

it’seasytotakeastandwhenyou’vegothealthinsurance.(laughterandapplause.)i’mgoingoffscriptnow,but--(laughter)--that’swhathappensatthecbc.

ourhighschoolgraduationrateisatarecordhigh,thedropoutrateisfalling,moreyoungpeopleareearningcollegedegreesthaneverbefore.lastyear,thenumberofchildrenlivinginpovertyfellby1.4million--thelargestdeclinesince1966.(applause.)sinceitookoffice,theoverallcrimerateandtheoverallincarcerationratehasgonedownbyabout10percent.that’sthefirsttimethey’vedeclinedatthesametimeinmorethan40years.fewerfolksinjail.crimestillgoingdown.(applause.)

butourworkisnotdonewhentoomanychildrenliveincrumblingneighborhoods,cyclingthroughsubstandardschools,traumatizedbydailyviolence.ourworkisnotdonewhenworkingamericansofallraceshaveseentheirwagesandincomesstagnate,evenascorporateprofitssoar;whenafrican-americanunemploymentisstilltwiceashighaswhiteunemployment;whenincomeinequality,ontherisefordecades,continuestoholdbackhardworkingcommunities,especiallycommunitiesofcolor.we’vegotunfinishedwork.andweknowwhattodo.that’stheworstpart--weknowwhattodo.

weknowwe’vegottoinvestininfrastructure,andmanufacturing,andresearchanddevelopmentthatcreatesnewjobs.we’vegottokeeprebuildingamiddleclasseconomywithladdersofopportunity,sothathardworkpaysoffandyouseehigherwagesandhigherincomes,andfairpayforwomendoingthesameworkasmen,andworkplaceflexibilityforparentsincaseachildgetssickoraparentneedssomehelp.(applause.)we’vegottobuildmorepromisezonespartnershipstosupportlocalrevitalizationofhard-hitcommunities.we’vegottokeepinvestinginearlyeducation.wewanttobringpreschooltoeveryfour-year-oldinthiscountry.(applause.)andwewanteverychildtohaveanexcellentteacher.andwewanttoinvestinourcommunitycollegesandexpandpellgrantsformorestudents.andi’mgoingtokeepworkingwithyoutomakecollegemoreaffordable.becauseeverychildinamerica,nomatterwhosheis,nomatterwhereshe’sborn,nomatterhowmuchmoneyherparentshave,oughttobeabletofulfillhergod-givenpotential.that’swhatwebelieve.(applause.)

soijustwanteverybodytounderstand--wehavemadeenormousprogress.there’salmostnoeconomicmeasurebywhichwearenotbetteroffthanwhenitookoffice.(applause.)unemploymentdown.deficitsdown.uninsureddown.povertydown.energyproductionup.manufacturingback.autoindustryback.but--andijustlistthesethingsjustsoifyouhaveadiscussionwithoneofyourfriends--(laughter)--andthey’reconfused.stockmarketup.corporatebalancesheetstrong.infact,thefolkswhoaredoingthebest,they’retheoneswhocomplainthemost.(laughterandapplause.)soyoucanjustpointthesethingsout.

butwestillhavetoclosetheseopportunitygaps.andwehavetoclosethejusticegap--howjusticeisapplied,butalsohowitisperceived,howitisexperienced.(applause.)ericholderunderstandsthis.(applause.)that’swhatwesawinfergusonthissummer,whenmichaelbrownwaskilledandacommunitywasdivided.weknowthattheunrestcontinues.andericspentsometimewiththeresidentsandpoliceofferguson,andthedepartmentofjusticehasindicatedthatitscivilrightsinvestigationisongoing.

now,iwon’tcommentontheinvestigation.iknowthatmichael’sfamilyisheretonight.(applause.)iknowthatnothinganyofuscansaycaneasethegriefoflosingachildsosoon.buttheangerandtheemotionthatfollowedhisdeathawakenedournationonceagaintotherealitythatpeopleinthisroomhavelongunderstood,whichis,intoomanycommunitiesaroundthecountry,agulfofmistrustexistsbetweenlocalresidentsandlawenforcement.

toomanyyoungmenofcolorfeeltargetedbylawenforcement,guiltyofwalkingwhileblack,ordrivingwhileblack,judgedbystereotypesthatfuelfearandresentmentandhopelessness.weknowthat,statistically,ineverythingfromenforcingdrugpolicytoapplyingthedeathpenaltytopullingpeopleover,therearesignificantracialdisparities.that’sjustthestatistics.onerecentpollshowedthatthemajorityofamericansthinkthecriminaljusticesystemdoesn’ttreatpeopleofallracesequally.thinkaboutthat.that’snotjustblacks,notjustlatinosorasiansornativeamericanssayingthingsmaynotbeunfair.that’smostamericans.

andthathasacorrosiveeffect--notjustontheblackcommunity;ithasacorrosiveeffectonamerica.itharmsthecommunitiesthatneedlawenforcementthemost.itmakesfolkswhoarevictimizedbycrimeandneedstrongpolicingreluctanttogotothepolicebecausetheymaynottrustthem.andtheworstpartofitisitscarstheheartsofourchildren.itscarstheheartsofthewhitekidswhogrowunnecessarilyfearfulofsomebodywhodoesn’tlooklikethem.itstainstheheartofblackchildrenwhofeelasifnomatterwhathedoes,hewillalwaysbeundersuspicion.thatisnotthesocietywewant.it’snotthesocietythatourchildrendeserve.(applause.)whetheryou’reblackorwhite,youdon’twantthatforamerica.

itwasinteresting--fergusonwasusedbysomeofamerica’senemiesandcriticstodeflectattentionfromtheirshortcomingsoverseas;toundermineoureffortstopromotejusticearoundtheworld.theysaid,well,lookatwhat’shappenedtoyoubackhome.

butasisaidthisweekattheunitednations,americaisspecialnotbecausewe’reperfect;americaisspecialbecauseweworktoaddressourproblems,tomakeourunionmoreperfect.wefightformorejustice.(applause.)wefighttocurewhatailsus.wefightforourideals,andwe’rewillingtocriticizeourselveswhenwefallshort.andweaddressourdifferencesintheopenspaceofdemocracy--withrespectfortheruleoflaw;withaplaceforpeopleofeveryraceandreligion;andwithanunyieldingbeliefthatpeoplewholovetheircountrycanchangeit.that’swhatmakesusspecial--notbecausewedon’thaveproblems,butbecauseweworktofixthem.andwewillcontinuetoworktofixthis.

andtothatend,weneedtohelpcommunitiesandlawenforcementbuildtrust,buildunderstanding,sothatourneighborhoodsstaysafeandouryoungpeoplestayontrack.andundertheleadershipofattorneygeneralericholder,thejusticedepartmenthaslaunchedanationalefforttodojustthat.he’salsobeenworkingtomakethecriminaljusticesystemsmarterandmoreeffectivebyaddressingunfairsentencingdisparities,changingdepartmentpoliciesonchargingmandatoryminimums,promotingstrongerreentryprogramsforthosewhohavepaidtheirdebttosociety.(applause.)

andweneedtoaddresstheuniquechallengesthatmakeithardforsomeofouryoungpeopletothrive.forallthesuccessstoriesthatexistinaroomlikethisone,weallknowrelatives,classmates,neighborswhowerejustassmartaswewere,justascapableaswewere,bornwiththesamelightbehindtheireyes,thesamejoy,thesamecuriosityabouttheworld--butsomehowtheydidn’tgetthesupporttheyneeded,ortheencouragementtheyneeded,ortheymadeamistake,ortheymissedanopportunity;theyweren’tabletoovercometheobstaclesthattheyfaced.

andso,infebruary,welaunchedmybrother’skeeper.(applause.)andiwasthefirstonetoacknowledgegovernmentcan’tplaytheonly,oreventheprimary,roleinthelivesofourchildren.butwhatwecandoisbringfolkstogether,andthat’swhatwe’redoing--philanthropies,businessleaders,entrepreneurs,faithleaders,mayors,educators,athletes,andtheyouththemselves--toexaminehowcanweensurethatouryoungmenhavethetoolstheyneedtoachievetheirfullpotential.

andwe’renotforgettingaboutthegirls,bytheway.igottwodaughters--idon’tknowifyounoticed.(laughter.)africanamericangirlsaremorelikelythantheirwhitepeersalsotobesuspended,incarcerated,physicallyharassed.blackwomenstruggleeverydaywithbiasesthatperpetuateoppressivestandardsforhowthey’resupposedtolookandhowthey’resupposedtoact.toooften,they’reeitherleftunderthehardlightofscrutiny,orcloakedinakindofinvisibility.

soinadditiontotheneweffortsonmybrother’skeeper,thewhitehousecouncilforwomenandgirlshasforyearsbeenworkingonissuesaffectingwomenandgirlsofcolor,fromviolenceagainstwomen,topayequity,toaccesstohealthcare.andyouknowmichellehasbeenworkingonthat.(applause.)becauseshedoesn’tthinkourdaughtersshouldbetreateddifferentlythananybodyelse’sson.i’vegotavestedinterestinmakingsurethatourdaughtershavethesameopportunitiesasboysdo.(applause.)
