Theyareknownasmotorhomes-literallykitchens,livingrooms,andbedsonthemoveacrossAmerica.Therearemorethan1.5millionoftheseself-propelledrollingdwellingsintheUnitedStates.Theyrangefromsimplepick-uptruckswithcamperunitsattachedtodeluxerecreationalvehicles-orRVs-asbigasamovingvan.Sinceamotorhomevacationisoftencheaperthanatriprequiringstaysathotelsandresorts,onemightthinktheRVindustryisthriving,despitethelongestanddeepestrecessionsincethe1930s.Butnotso.About62,000newmotorhomesrolledoutofdealershipsin2023,butjustone-thirdthatmanyweresoldlastyear.Ordersareupearlythisyear,however,asconsumercreditloosenssomewhat.

Oftenneighborstakeseveraltripstogethereachyear,sharinggasolinecosts,home-cookedmeals-nottomentionlaughsandmemories.EvenwithpoorgasmileageonmostRVunits,thesevagabondscantravelforaboutone-fifthwhatotherspaywhofly,buymealsinrestaurants,andstayinmotels.

Andwhiledriversandpassengersalikeinlargemotorhomesaresupposedtokeeptheirseatbeltsfastenedontheroad,it'snotuncommontofindsomeoneinbackreachingforcoldrefreshments,spreadingmapsoutonatable-eventakinganap,fullyreclined!
