AshasbeenseenbeforeinBrazil,thesurgeintherateofdeforestationisasignthatthecountry'seconomyisbooming—recentlyithasbeengrowingatanannualratearound5%.MostofthetimberfelledillegallyinAmazonissoldtodomesticbuyers,inparticulartotheconstructionindustryinBrazil'srichersouthernstates.Buttheforestisalsothreatenedbytherapidexpansionoffarmingandranching.
