DearRosemary,

Thanksforyourletter,whichtookafortnighttoarrive.Itwaswonderfultohearfromyou.Iknowyou’redyingtohearallaboutmylifehere,soI’veincludedsomephotoswhichwillhelpyoupicturetheplacesItalkabout.

Youaskedaboutmyhighschool.Well,it’sabushschool-theclassroomsaremadeofbambooanttheroofsofgrass.Ittakesmeonlyafewminutestowalktoschooldownamuddytrack.WhenIreachtheschoolgroundstherearelotsof“goodmornings”formefromtheboys.Manyofthemhavewalkedalongway,sometimesuptotwohours,togettoschool.

There’snoelectricityorwaterandevennotextbookseither!I’mstilltryingtoadapttotheseconditions.However,onethingisforsure.I’vebecomemoreimaginativeinmyteaching.Scienceismymostchallengingsubjectasmystudentshavenoconceptofdoingexperiments.Infactthereisnoequipment,andifIneedwaterIhavetocarryitfrommyhouseinabucket!TheotherdayIwasshowingtheboystheweeklychemistryexperimentwhen,beforeIknewit,themixturewasbubblingovereverywhere!Theboyswhohadnevercomeacrossanythinglikethisbeforestartedjumpingoutofthewindows.SometimesIwonderhowrelevantchemistryistothesestudents,mostofwhomwillbegoingbacktotheirvillagesafterYear8anyway.Tobehonest,IdoubtwhetherI’mmakinganydifferencetotheseboys’livesatall.

YouaskedwhetherI’mgettingtoknowanylocalpeople.Well,that’sactuallyquitedifficultasIdon’tspeakmuchofthelocalEnglishdialectyet.Butlastweekendanotherteacher,Jenny,andIdidvisitavillagewhichisthehomeofoneoftheboys,Tombe.Itwasmyfirstvisittoaremotevillage.Wewalkedfortwoandahalfhourstogetthere-firstupamountaintoaridgefromwherewehadfantasticviewsandthendownasteeppathtothevalleybelow.Whenwearrivedatthevillage,Tombe’smother,Kiak,whohadbeenpullingweedsinhergarden,startedcrying“ieeeieee”.Weshookhandswithallthevillagers.EveryoneseemedtobearelativeofTombe’s.

Tombe’sfather,Mukap,ledustohishouse,alowbamboohutwithgrassstickingoutoftheroof-thisshowsitisaman’shouse.Thehutswereround,notrectangularliketheschoolbuildings.Therewerenowindowsandthedoorwaywasjustbigenoughtogetthrough.Thehutwasdarkinsidesoittooktimeforoureyestoadjust.FreshgrasshadbeenlaidonthefloorandtherewasanewlymadeplatformforJennyandmetosleepon.UsuallyKiakwouldsleepinherownhut,butthatnightshewasgoingtosharetheplatformwithus.MukapandTombeweretosleeponsmallbedsinanotherpartofthehut.Therewasafireplaceinthecentreofthehutnearthedoorway.TheonlypossessionsIcouldseewereonebroom,afewtinplatesandcupsandacoupleofjars.

OutsideMukapwasbuildingafire.Oncethefirewasgoing,helaidstones

onit.Whenhot,heplacedtheminanemptyoildrumwithkaukau(sweetpotato),cornandgreens.Hethencoveredthevegetableswithbananaleavesandleftthemtosteam.Isniffedthefood;itsmelleddelicious.Weateinsidethehutsittingroundthefire.Ilovedlisteningtothefamilysoftlytalkingtoeachotherintheirlanguage,eventhoughIcouldnotparticipateintheconversation.Luckily,Tombecouldbeourinterpreter.

Later,Inoticedatincanstandingupsidedownonthegrilloverthefire.AfterashorttimeTombethrewitoutofthedoorway.Iwaspuzzled.Tombetoldmethatthecanwasheatedtodryouttheleftoverfood.Theybelievethatanyleftoversattractevilspiritsinthenight,sothefoodisdriedupinthecanandthecanisthenthrownoutofthehut.Otherwisetheydon’twasteanything.

Weleftthevillagethenextmorningaftermanygoodbyesandfirmhandshakes.Mymuscleswereachingandmykneesshakingasweclimbeddownthemountaintowardshome.ThateveningIfellhappilyintobed.ItwassuchaprivilegetohavespentadaywithTombe’sfamily.

It’sgettinglateandIhavetopreparetomorrow’slessonsanddosomepaperwork.Pleasewritesoon.

教學(xué)設(shè)計思路

這是一節(jié)“同堂異構(gòu)”比賽課,小學(xué)規(guī)定抽簽選班級,提前兩天拿到課堂內(nèi)容“ALetterHome”,這篇文章文本較長,要在有限的45分鐘內(nèi)讓同學(xué)徹低把握它,用傳統(tǒng)的教學(xué)步驟時光會比較倉促,并且簡單走過場、教學(xué)沒有著重點,同學(xué)對文章印象也會不深。而《新課標》的指導(dǎo)思想中要求:在培養(yǎng)同學(xué)的語言學(xué)問、語言技能、情感態(tài)度、學(xué)習策略和文化意識等素質(zhì)的基礎(chǔ)上進展同學(xué)綜合運用語言的能力;優(yōu)化同學(xué)的英語學(xué)習辦法;關(guān)注同學(xué)的情感,提高他們的人文素質(zhì)等。于是我抓住這個單元“志愿者服務(wù)工作”這一主題著重培養(yǎng)同學(xué)的情感態(tài)度、人文素質(zhì)。通過閱讀,我發(fā)覺在字里行間描述了在巴布亞新幾內(nèi)亞志愿服務(wù)工作的艱辛的同時,也著重表達了她對這份工作的熱愛以及服務(wù)過程中的點點滴滴給她帶來的幸福與歡樂,這與本單元的主題-Sharing是全都的,于是我打算從這點著手設(shè)計教學(xué),讓同學(xué)通過閱讀了解什么是奉獻精神。這樣既培養(yǎng)了同學(xué)的語言學(xué)問、閱讀技能,也提高了他們的人文素質(zhì)。

Model7Unit4Sharing

教學(xué)課型:閱讀課

教學(xué)內(nèi)容:Reading

教學(xué)目標:培養(yǎng)同學(xué)通過閱讀獵取語言學(xué)問和有關(guān)志愿服務(wù)的信息,并在學(xué)習的過程中體味協(xié)助別人的歡樂,熟悉與人共享的意義,從而培養(yǎng)同學(xué)助人為樂的精神。

教學(xué)步驟:

步驟一:導(dǎo)入及熱身

活動一:聆聽歌曲《青年志愿者之歌》,觀賞有關(guān)志愿者的圖片,看完后,老師提問:Whoisthesongsungfor?老師:Intheiropinion,Ifeverybodyoffersalittlelove,theworldwill

becomemorebeautiful.

活動二:了解志愿者的種類。老師提問:Whatisavolunteer?老師引導(dǎo)同學(xué)作出以下回答:Avolunteerisapersonwhohelpsthedisabled/plantstrees/teachesthekidsinthemountainousareasorpoorcountries/worksintheRedCross/cleansthecommunity/…;老師提問:Whohasbeenavolunteer?Didyougetpaidasavolunteer?老師:Volunteersarenotpaidnotbecausetheyareworthlessbutbecausetheyarepriceless.

設(shè)計意圖:引入話題,讓同學(xué)了解青年志愿者的工作性質(zhì)。

教學(xué)效果:因為有歌曲和圖片的輔助,同學(xué)基本能夠正確回答相關(guān)問題,并能很直觀、清楚地初步了解青年志愿者相關(guān)信息。

步驟二:讀前

活動一:通過比較現(xiàn)代都市與貧窮鄉(xiāng)村住房,讓同學(xué)了解所志愿服務(wù)的鄉(xiāng)村的現(xiàn)狀。老師提問:Wheredoyouthinkthevolunteersaremostneeded?Ruralareasorurbanareas?展示Jo工作的地方的相關(guān)圖片,老師提問:Whatarethese?Whataretheydoing?盡量讓同學(xué)用英語表達出來。

活動二:介紹Jo和她的伴侶、收信人Rosemary.并教會詞組bedyingto,

設(shè)計意圖:讓同學(xué)初步了解在信件中所描述的鄉(xiāng)村,同時為同學(xué)之后的自主閱讀作鋪墊。

教學(xué)效果:同學(xué)可能提前預(yù)習了,對于展示的圖片,他們基本能用英語表達出來;至于詞組bedyingto,我問同學(xué):你們想放假嗎?很想是不是?想“死”了吧?那么你們就可以用這個表達:Iamdyingtotakeseveraldaysoff.同學(xué)對這個詞組印象深刻。

步驟三:閱讀

活動一:從信件中找出志愿工作的艱辛。

第一步:迅速默讀。默讀課文按照以下要求在課文中盡量找出相關(guān)信息。

其次步:小組研究。六人或四人小組研究,互相補充,并研究理解所找各個句子的意思。

第三步:叫各小組的代表展示他們的研究成績,有不同意見的可以互相補充。

老師對黑體字做一定的解釋并帶讀。

設(shè)計意圖:通過尋覓信件中的描述來揣測的觀點、意圖,這是閱讀理解總要求同學(xué)把握的一種閱讀技巧。

教學(xué)效果:這個班的基礎(chǔ)相對較好,同學(xué)學(xué)習能力、接受能力較強,所以教學(xué)任務(wù)完成得很好。

活動二:學(xué)習對志愿活動雖艱辛但樂觀絕對的態(tài)度。

讓同學(xué)繼續(xù)研究找出覺得這份志愿工作值得的相關(guān)句子,并仔細理解。

設(shè)計意圖:閱讀理解中,對于文章的的主旨大意、的觀點、看法及態(tài)度題,同學(xué)都要學(xué)會如何按照課文當中相關(guān)信息提煉出來。這也是我們老師在教學(xué)過程中應(yīng)當對同學(xué)舉行著重培養(yǎng)的。

教學(xué)效果:同學(xué)反映很好,能快速地捕獲信息。

步驟四:主題升華

活動設(shè)計:引導(dǎo)
