EqualityissocherishedintheU.S.thatitisseenashavingareligiousbasis.Americansbelievethatallpeoplearecreatedequalandthatallshouldhaveanequalopportunitytosucceed.Thisconceptofequalityisstrangetoseven-eighthsoftheworldwhichviewsstatusandauthorityasdesirable,eveniftheyhappentobenearthebottomofthesocialorder.SinceAmericansliketotreatforeigners“Justlikeanybodyelse“,newcomerstotheU.S.shouldrealizethatnoinsultorpersonalindignityisintendediftheyaretreatedinalessthan-deferentialmannerbywaitersinrestaurants,clerksinstoresandhotels,taxidrivers,andotherservicepersonnel.

Americanstakecreditonlyforwhattheyaccomplishasindividuals.Theygetnocreditforhavingbeenbornintoarichfamilybutpridethemselvesinhavingclimbedtheladderofsuccess,towhateverlevel,allbythemselves.InanEnglish-languagedictionary,therearemorethan100compositewordsthathavetheword“self“asaprefix:self-aware.self-confident,self-conscious,self-contented,self-control,self-critici,self-deception,self-defeating,self-denial.Theequivalentofthesewordscannotbefoundinmostotherlanguages.ItisanindicatorofhowhighlyAmericansregardtheself-mademanorwoman.
