EfficacystudydesignDuetoacupuncture'sinvasivenature,oneofthemajorchallengesinefficacyresearchisinthedesignofanappropriateplacebocontrolgroup,andithasbeenpointedoutthatpositiveresultsfromsomestudiesontheefficacyofacupuncturemaybeasaresultofpoorlydesignedstudiesorpublicationbias.AcupunctureSideEffectsandRisksTheU.S.FoodandDrugAdministration(FDA)regulatesacupunctureneedlesforusebylicensedpractitioners,requiringthatneedlesbemanufacturedandlabeledaccordingtocertainstandards.AcupunctureSideEffectsandRisksWhennotdeliveredproperly,acupuncturecancauseseriousadverseeffects,includinginfectionsandpuncturedorgans.Findaqualifiedpractitioner!StatusofAcupunctureResearchTherehavebeenmanystudiesonacupuncture’spotentialhealthbenefitsforawiderangeofconditions.Summarizingearlierresearch,the1997NIHConsensusStatementonAcupuncturefoundthat,overall,resultswerehardtointerpretbecauseofproblemswiththesizeanddesignofthestudies.StatusofAcupunctureResearchIntheyearssincetheConsensusStatementwasissued,theNationalCenterforComplementaryandAlternativeMedicine(NCCAM)hasfundedextensiveresearchtoadvancescientificunderstandingofacupuncture.SomerecentNCCAM-supportedstudieshavelookedat:StatusofAcupunctureResearchWhetheracupunctureworksforspecifichealthconditionssuchaschroniclow-backpain,andheadacheHowacupuncturemightwork,suchaswhathappensinthebrainduringacupuncturetreatmentWaystobetteridentifyandunderstandthepotentialneurologicalpropertiesof
