EarthHour2009wasfrom8:30pmto9:30pmlocaltime,onMarch28,2009.88countriesandabout4,000citiesjoinedEarthHour2009,tentimesmorethanEarthHour2008had(2008sawabout400citiesparticipate).Amongtheparticipantsin2009was,forthefirsttime,theheadquartersoftheUnitedNationsinNewYorkCity.TheUNconservativelyestimatesthatitsparticipationwouldsave$102inenergy.
ReportsshowedthatthePhilippinestoppedtheEarthHourparticipationas647citiesandtownsorover15mill
ionFilipinoswereestimatedtohavejoinedinthehour-longlights-offat8:30-9:30pmlocaltime.ThiswasfollowedbyGreecewith484citiesandtownsparticipating,andAustraliawith309.
ThecapitalcityofIndia,NewDelhi'spowerdemandfellby1000MW.TheCanadianprovinceofOntario,notincludingthecityofToronto,sawadecreaseof6%ofelectricitywhileTorontosawadecreaseof15.1%(nearlydoubledfrom8.7%thepreviousyear)asmanybusinessesdarkened,
includingthelandmarkCNTower.AccordingtoVietnamElectricityCompany,Vietnamelectricitydemandfell140,000kWhduringEarthHour.ThePhilippineswasabletosave611MWofelectricityduringtheperiod,andwassaidtobeequaltoshuttingdownadozencoal-firedpowerplantsforanhour.
CriticsclaimedthatbecauseEarthHourvolunteersdrivearoundtogetthewordout,andbecausepeopleuseuneconomicalbatteryoperatedtorchesinsteadofmoreeconomicallightbulbs,it'spossiblethatEarthHouractuallyresultedinanincreaseinenergyusage.
