Abstract:CarlOrff'smusiceducationphilosophyemphasizestheimportanceofintegratingmusicwithmovementandlanguagetocreateaholisticlearningexperience.ThispaperexploreshowOrff'sideashaveinfluencedmusiceducationinChinaandofferssuggestionsonhowtofurtherapplyanddevelophisideasintheChinesecontext.

Introduction

CarlOrff(1895-1982)wasaGermancomposer,educator,andmusicologistwhodevelopedaninnovativeapproachtomusiceducationknownasOrffSchulwerk.Thisapproachemphasizestheimportanceofintegratingmusicwithmovementandlanguagetocreateaholisticlearningexperience.Sinceitsinceptioninthe1920s,OrffSchulwerkhasbecomeaninfluentialapproachtomusiceducationaroundtheworld,includingChina.ThispaperexploreshowOrff'sideashaveinfluencedmusiceducationinChinaandhowtheycanbefurtherappliedanddevelopedintheChinesecontext.

OrffSchulwerkandMusicEducationinChina

DespitethewidespreadadoptionofOrffSchulwerkinChina,therearestillsomechallengestoitsimplementation.Oneofthemainchallengesisthelackofresources,includinginstrumentsandtrainingforteachers.AnotherchallengeisthefocusonrotelearningandexamsintheChineseeducationsystem,whichcanlimitthecreativityandimprovisationthatareessentialtoOrffSchulwerk.However,thesechallengescanbeaddressedthroughincreasedsupportformusiceducationandagreateremphasisoncreativityandexplorationinthenationalcurriculum.

SuggestionsfortheDevelopmentofOrffSchulwerkinChina

TofurtherdevelopandapplyOrffSchulwerkintheChinesecontext,thereareseveralsuggestionsthatcouldbeconsidered.

First,moreresourcesshouldbemadeavailabletomusicteachers,includinginstruments,musicmaterials,andtrainingopportunities.Thiscouldbeachievedthroughincreasedfundingformusiceducationprogramsandpartnershipsbetweenschoolsandcommunityorganizations.

Second,thereshouldbegreateremphasisonactivelearningandstudent-centeredpedagogyinmusiceducationinChina.Thiscouldbeachievedbyincorporatingmoreimprovisation,composition,andcollaborationintomusiclessons,andbyusingOrffSchulwerkasaframeworkfortheseactivities.

Third,thereshouldbemoreintegrationbetweenmusicandotherartforms,suchastheatre,dance,andvisualart.Thiscouldbeachievedbycreatinginterdisciplinaryprojectsthatcombinemusicwithotherartforms,orbyintegratingmusiclessonsintoothersubjects.
