ChapterOneIntroductionInthemovieMaleficent,Maleficentisabrave,strong,intelligent,witty,compassionate,righteousandloyalwoman.Althoughshehasexperiencedmanysetbacksandhardships,shealwaysbelievesinloveanddarestogiveeverythingforthepeoplesheloves.Maleficenthasherownsetofideasandprinciplesindealingwithlove.Shewon’tletherselffallintoendlesslove.Shewillchoosethepeoplesheshouldloverationally.Althoughshehasasexualimpulse,whenshemeetssomethingshereallywants,shewillpursueitdesperately.Maleficent’swillfulnessandimpulsivenessareduetoherinnerinsecurity.Sheneedstofeelloved,paidattentionto,respectedandunderstoodinlove.Sowhenshemeetslove,shewillpursueitdesperately,butwhenlovecan’tcontinue,shewillgiveupwithouthesitation.Maleficentwillnothesitatetogiveupwhenothersuseitbyimpropermeans.Sheisaverykindandpurewoman,andtherearemanywomenlikeMaleficentinreallife.Theyarealsoeagertofeelloved,concerned,understoodandrespectedinlove.Buttheyoftencan’tgetthedesiredresultsandgethurtforit.ThisattitudetowardslovereflectsMaleficent’sloyaltyandperseverancetolove.ButMaleficentispersistentandsingle-mindedaboutlove,andalwayshasasoberandrationalattitudetowardslove.Thisisaqualitythatmodernwomenlackandneedtopossess.Modernwomenareoftenboundbyideasandcan’tbetrulyindependentlikeMaleficent.ChapterTwoOverviewofFeminismFeminismisanewsocialtrendofthoughtinmodernsociety,whichhasimpactedtheconceptofpatriarchalsocietyandarousedpeople’sextensiveattentionanddiscussiononwomen.Itemphasizesequalityandopposesadvocatingthejointparticipationofmenandwomeninpoliticalandsocialaffairsandopposesgenderinequality.Feminismcriticizedandcondemnedallkindsofinjusticesinthesocietyatthattime,whichpromotedthewomen’sliberationmovement.Feminism,asanideologicalsystem,riseswiththeemergenceofindustrialization,urbanizationandurbanization.Itisarelativelycompleteideologicalsystem,includingfourparts:feministthought,feministmovementandfeministculture.Thischapterwillfocusonthebasiccontentoffeminisminordertofurtherdeepenreaders’understandingoffeminism.2.1TheConnotationofFeminismFeminismisalsocalledmaleandfemaleegalitarianism.Itspurposeistoputanendtotheestablishmentandinitiationofsocialtheoriesandpoliticalmovementssuchassexism,sexualexploitation,discriminationandsexualadvocacy.Simplyput,feminismisnotonlyaboutgivingwomenjusticesothattheycanenjoythesamerightsasmalecitizens,includingpersonalfreedom,living,workingandgoingout,etc,toexpresstheiropinionsandopposeallinsultsandviolations.Inaddition,feminismisalsoasocialmovementthatpaysattentiontotheoryandencouragesthemobilizationofwomenatthebottomtoriseupandresistunequal.Itisnotsimplytopromoteacertainideabuttotakepracticalactionstohelpthewomenwhohavebeenacceptedbyfeminism.Tellthemthatfeminismisnotamovementoranideology,butathinkingthatwomenandmenareequal.Itaimsatconfrontingwomenwhohavesufferedinjusticeandpromotingpeacefulcoexistencebetweenmenandwomen.Feminismisnotasloganoratheory.Sheaskswomentofightforthemselves.Therefore,womenshouldbefullyawareoftheirresponsibilitiesandmissionsinthisstruggleandbravelyexpresstheirideasandviewssothatmorepeoplecanunderstandtheimportanceoffeminism.2.2TheDevelopmentofFeminismWomen’smovementcanberoughlydividedintothreeperiods:Thefirstgenerationoffeminists(1790sto1920s):WesternfeministsareagroupoffeministswhocameintobeingaftertheenlightenmentoftheFrenchbourgeoisrevolutioninthesecondhalfofthenineteenthcenturywiththeindustrialrevolutioninEurope.Thisperiodestablishedthedirectionofstruggleforthewomen’smovementanddetermineditskeynoteasakindofsocialpractice.Women’sdemandsforeducation,employmentandparticipationinpoliticsareultimatelyaimedatstrivingforwomen’sequalstatusinsociety,whiletheimperfectandunreasonablelabormarketisthebiggestobstacletothewomen’smovement.Itcanbesaidthattheweakpositionofwomeninthelabormarketisregardedasoneofthemainreasonsforthedifferenceinsocialstatusbetweenmenandwomen,whichwasformedduringthisperiod.Althoughfeministideologyhassinceevolvedandsomechangeshavetakenplaceinthecontextofthelabormarket,theconceptisstilldeeplyrootedamongfeminists.Thesecondgenerationoffeminists(1920sto1960s):Modernfeminists.Thisperiodisthemostimportantperiodoffeministsinwesternsociety.Feministsbelievethatalthoughwomenstriveforpoliticalandeconomicequality,theyhavenotfundamentallychangedtheinequalityofwomeninsociety.Forexample,women’sgroupswithvotingrightscontinuetobepoliticallysubordinate,whilejobsegregationandbleakjobprospectsariseinthebasicguaranteesofequalpayandequalemployment.Suchacontradictorysituationmakesfeministsdeeplyreflectonitandputforwardtheirownuniquefeministtheoryonthebasisofit.Feminismemphasizesthatprivateforcesinthefamilyrestrictwomen’ssocialandeconomicactivities.However,liberalfeminismfocusesontherestrictionofwomen’sfamiliesandthuslimitstheirpublicrightsinsociety.Eachofthemhashisownfocus,buttheyallthinkthatthefamilystructureisthemainreasonforthelowstatusofwomen.Radicalfeminism,thoughitseemsodd,isactuallytryingtoeliminatethefamilyfundamentallyandsolvetheinequalitybetweenmenandwomen.Thethirdgenerationoffeminists:Post-modernfeminists,theyarefacedwiththeserioussocialinfluencebroughtby“genderfreedom”,suchasthestrongsuspicionofwomen’sfreedombyconservatism,thesignificantincreaseofdivorcerateandthespreadofAIDS.Theybegantothinkdeeplyaboutthis.Ontheonehand,theyaffirmedtheachievementsmadebythefeministmovementinsafeguardingwomen’ssocialrights,ontheotherhand,theychallengedthesubversionofthefamilystructurebyfeministsPost-modernfeminismisstillinitsinfancy,andtherearetwoschools:“essence-onlytheory”and“constructivism”.Althoughtheirtheoreticalstartingpointsaredifferent,theyallbaseontherecognitionoffamilyandaimatrealizingwomen’sliberation.ChapterThreeTheEmbodimentofMaleficent’sFeminismIdeologyMaleficentisnotaperfectperson.Shehassomeshortcomingsandiswillfulandimpulsiveincharacter.Whenshemeetslove,shewillshowthatsheiscompletelyimmersedinloveandwillpayahugepriceforit.Maleficent’swillfulimpulseisduetoherinsecurity.Sheneedstofeellovedandconcernedinlove.Atthesametime,Maleficentisalsoapersonwithasenseofjusticeandcompassion.Whenshemeetshumanbeings,shewillfeelsorryforthemandbewillingtogiveeverythingshehastoprotectthem.Breakingthedesireforcontrolovermenalsomakespeoplerealizethatwomencan’tsurviveonlybyrelyingonmen’shelp.3.1AttitudetowardsLoveMaleficentbelievesthatloveisanequalrelationship,arelationshipofmutualrespectandlove,ratherthanablindemotionandbehavior.Thiskindofloveshouldbebasedonaclearmindratherthansimpleemotionalimpulse.Itshouldbebasedonrespect,understandingandtoleranceratherthananextremeviewoflove.3.1.1ThePursuitofEqualityinLoveMaleficentandStephenhaveknowneachothersincechildhood,andtheyhavedeepfeelingsbetweenthem.StephentookgreatcareofMaleficent.HehasbeensilentlygivingMaleficentwarmthandsupporttomakeherfeelherownexistence.HebrokeintotheforestundertheprotectionofMaleficent.Hewasneverhurtbyanyelves.Shewashispatronsaint.Shegavehimcourageandwisdom.Basedonmutualunderstanding,mutualsupportandprotection.Withthegrowthofage,theywereoriginallyhappy,buttheygraduallybecameunfamiliar.Theboywasattractedbyworldlygreedandrelentlessbetrayalofpowerandstatus.Maleficentcutherwingsinexchangeforsupremepower.WhenMaleficentsawthatherlovehadbecomeatragedy,shefinallyrealizedthatthebeautyshehadbeenpursuinghadbeencompletelychangedafterapainfultorture.Shenolongercravesthebeautyintheoriginallove,butbeginstore-examineherlove,hopingtohaveamorerealandvaluablelove.Therelationshipbetweenmenandwomenshouldbeafeelingofmutualrespectandrespectforeachother,ratherthanblamingeachotherandlettingeachotherfallintoakindofpainthatcannotextricatethemselves.Onlywhenbothsidescanunderstandeachothercanwehaveatrulyequalrelationship,insteadofonesidealwaysgiving,theothersidealwaysreceiving,andalwayswanderinginthepainofgivingeachother.3.1.2TreatingLoveSensiblyandSoberlyIfwomenwanttorealizerationalsobrietyinlove,theymustatleastachievetheabilityofself-esteem,self-love,rationaljudgmentandself-regulation.Inthemovie,Maleficentandthelittleboyfallinlovesweetly,butthehappydaysarealwaysshort.Theboyleftherwhentheirfeelingswarmedup.Theboywantedtopursuepower.Maleficentsilentlyburiedthisfeelingdeepinhisheart.Sheknowshowtorestrainherfeelings.WhenMaleficentwasbetrayedandhadherwingscutoff,shealsotriedtoconvincetheelvesthatshehadnofeelingsforthelittleboy.Sheisafraidofothersknowingherfeelingsandothers’compromise.Sosheavoidedtalkingaboutitandtriedtotakeontheresponsibilityofguardingtheforest.Shewon’tdenythelittleboy’scompanybecauseofhisbetrayal.Becausesheknowsthatloveisnotthewholeoflife,shecanlivewellwithoutlove.Whenherlovewiththelittleboycan’tcontinue,shewillbravelyletgoofeachother.Shewillsaygoodbyetothelittleboyandwishhimhappinessofhisown.Inthislove,Maleficentlooksatlovewithrationalthinking.Shetakesloveverylightlyandrationally,andwon’tgiveeverythingblindlyforlove.Thisistheaffirmationandrespectofself-worthinlove,anditisalsothebestinterpretationoflove.Womenshouldbeself-respectingandself-lovingintheirthoughts,anddon’tletthemselvesbehurtbecauseofunworthypeopleorthings.Inthefaceoflove,weshouldlearntojudgerationallyandhaveaclearmind.Beanindependent,strong,independent,thoughtfulandself-awareperson.3.2TheRedemptionofFemalePowerMaleficentinthearticleisheroicandfearless,likeaheroineprotectingherhome,fightingmentothedeath,notafraidofthem,notdependentonthem.Ultimately,itisbecauseshedarestosaveherselfandliveforherself.Buttherebellionbroughtaboutbyhatredisnotenoughtosustainherforlong.Hatredmakespeoplefeeltired,butlovedoesnot.Lovewillmakepeopleacceptfromtheheart,thelittleprincessawakenedthemotherlyloveofMaleficent,sothattheMaleficentletgoofhatredandtolerateeverything.ThischaptermapsoutfromMaleficentthefeministresistancetomalecontrolandthefemalechallengetomalediscourse.3.2.1TheSalvationofMaleficent’sSelfMaleficentherselfisawitchwithpowerfulmagicandherpowersaregreat,sowhensubjectedtoruthlessbetrayal,shealsoreactstohatredmorestronglythanatraditionalwoman.Whenherwingswerecutandherloverrebelled,shedidnotholdbacklikeatraditionalwoman.Traditionalwomencanonlybearcryingsilently,butshesavesherselfwithherown.Shesavedherselfinherownway,andwhentheMoorForestwasattacked,sheresistedtenaciouslyandfoughtbravely,reflectingthetruefemininity,womencanbeasbraveandfearlessasmen,breakingpeople’sinherentnotionoftraditionalwomen,andalsoshowingtheresistancetomenwantingtocontroleverything.Itreflectsthestrongsenseofself-helpofwomenwhoarenotdependentonmen.Manywomen,whenforcedtodoso,willchooseamethodofredemption-torunaway.Buttheendresultofescapingisjustachangeintheropeofbondage,theycannotreallyjumpoutofthecircle.Theresistancewasonlysuccessfulwhenwomengatheredthecouragetostartchangingtheirlivesheadonandgoafterthelifetheyaspiredto.Theawakeningofwomenneverhappensovernight,andthisideawasarebellionatthetime.Butitwasagreatbreakthroughforwomenatthattime.3.2.2TheSalvationofMaleficent’sMaternalLoveAftersufferingthebetrayalofhumans,Maleficentdevelopedadeep-seatedhatredforallhumans,shecouldnotaccommodatethem,butwhenseeingthesweetsmileofthelittleprincess,shechosetoputasideherhatredandaccommodatethehumankingdom.Atfirstshedidnothavefeelingsforthelittleprincess,butwiththecompanyofdayafterday,shefelldeeplyinlovewiththislittlegirl,andatthesametimeshedeeplyregrettedthatshehadcastamagicspellonthislovelylittlegirlbecauseshedidnotbelievethattherewouldbetrueloveinthisworld.Itwasthelittlegirlwhomadeherunderstandwhattrueloveis,sowhenthelittlegirlfellasleep,onlyMaleficent’skisswokeupthelittleprincess.Theday-to-daycompanionshipawakensMaleficent’smotherlylove,becauseofwhichsheputsasideherhatred,tolerateseverything,andfinallyachievesaharmoniouscoexistencebetweenmanandnature.ThesolidaritybetweenthelittleprincessandMaleficentalsobreaksthetraditionthatwomencanonlyrelyonmaleredemptiontogainanewlife,breakingtheimageofwomenastheweak,subvertingthemalesupremacyofthesubjectposition,establishingthesubjectpositionofwomen,manifestedthroughmaternallovereflectsthegreatnessandsolidarityofwomen,thepursuitofthesamestatusasmen,womenalsohavetherighttospeakthatcanredeemothers.Shegiveseverythingforherdaughter,includingstatusandpower,andreflectsthefeministbeliefthattruelovehasnothingtodowithstatusandpower,andthattrueloveispresentedthroughtime.3.3FreedomofChoiceInthemovie,Maleficentisanelfintheforestkingdom.Shehasapairofwingsthatcanflyfreelyandgoanywhereshewants.Shewaspureandinnocentsinceshewasachild,andshecouldrunandplayfreelyinthekingdomwithoutthebondageofherfamilyandfather.Everythingshedidwastoobeyherownheart.3.3.1FreedomofChoiceforReproductionWomendonotliveforothers,butforthemselves,tobetheirownrolemodels,notonlyasmaleappendages.Traditionally,womenreceiverestrictionsandoppressionfrommeninallaspects,eventherighttoreproduceisnotafreechoice,buttheactofreproductionitselfisarightthatwomenshouldhave,beingwomen,butreproductionisnotanecessarypartoftheirlives,itisimposedonthembymen.Inthemovie,Maleficentdidn’thaveababy.Sheonlyhadalovelydaughter.Eventhoughsheisnotherown,Maleficentstilllovesherdaughter.Shecangiveeverythingforthelittleprincess,includingstatusandpower.AlthoughthefilmMaleficenttellsthestoryofwomen’seffortsandstrugglesfortheirinvoluntaryfate.However,itdoesnotbelittleorsympathizewithwomenthemselves,butfocusesontheresistanceandstrugglethatwomenshowafterbeingtreatedunfairly.Thisraisesthethemeofthefilmtoanewheight.Womenarenolongeratoolforfertility.Theycanpursuethelifetheywantorchoosenottohavechildren.Maleficentisunmarriedandchildlessallherlife,butsheisstillhappyandcomplete.Herlifewasinsharpcontrastwiththatofwomeninthesocietyatthattime.3.3.2FreedomofChoiceoverDestinyInthatage,womenhavebeeninaselectivesituation.Toomuchpassivityisacompletelossoffreedom,womenshouldalsostandinthesamepositionasmentochoosewhattheywanttodo.Itisbelievedthatwomen’sabilityislowerthanthatofmen,whichiscausedbysocietyandwrongeducation.Butinthemovie,Maleficentisawitch,shehasgreatpowertofightagainsttheking,shehastherighttochoosetoprotecttheirpeople,notjustpassivelybear,sheandthekingstoodtothesameheightabove,tomastertheirowndestiny.Womenoftenneedtopayahugepriceiftheywanttogetridoftheiruncontrollablefate.Whetheritisthepursuitofself-liberationofMaleficentorthenaivelittleprincess,theyallfoughttenaciouslywithfate.Womenoftenhavetopayahugepriceiftheywanttohaveaninvoluntaryfate.Theymustgiveuptheirfreedomandrights,giveuptheirrightsanddignity,andevengothroughgreatpainsandhardships.Nomatterhowdeterminedtheyaretowantthisfate,theymustmakegreatefforts.Maleficentchallengedherdestinywithherkindness,courage,loveandstrongspirit.Inthefaceofhumanattack,sheactivelyconfrontedanddidnotflinch.Evenifherwingsarebroken,sheactivelyfacesthedifficultiesinherlife.Shefirmlybelievesthatfateisinherownhands.3.4AwakeningofSelf-consciousnessMaleficent’sfeministconsciousnessisreflectedinthefactthatshehelpedthelittleprincesssaveherfriend.AlthoughMaleficentisavillain,shedoesn’thurtotherlifeinthehumanworldjustbecausesheisavillain.Instead,Ihavebeenusingmykindhearttohelpthelittleprincesssaveherfriends.InMaleficent’sview,thehumanworldisnotagoodandbeautifulplace.Therefore,shehasbeentryingtohelpthehumanworldsolveproblemsandpromotepeacefulcoexistenceamonghumanworlds.ThefilmMaleficentshowsusawhole
