2、the cow.,The history of the school,There is no clear date of foundation, but teaching existed at Oxford in some form in 1096 and developed rapidly from 1167, when Henry II banned English students from attending the University of Paris. The returning scholars flocked to the nascent institutions in Ox

3、ford, which came together to elect their first Chancellor in 1201.,After disputes between students and Oxford townsfolk in 1209, some academics fled north-east to Cambridge, where they established what became the University of Cambridge,and the rioting hastened the establishment of primitive halls o

4、f residence. These were succeeded by the first of Oxfords colleges, which began as medieval halls of residence or endowed houses under the supervision of a Master. University, Balliol and Merton Colleges, which were established between 1249 and 1264, are the oldest.,Oxford lies obout 57 miles north-

5、werst of London. A medium-sized city with a total poulation of some 140000 people , including over 30000 students.,There are 104 libraries. The Bodleian Library the main research library of the University of Oxford, is one of the oldestlibraries in Europe.And in Britain is second in side only to the
