3、ay with his skiff empty and he always went down to help him carry either the coiled lines or the gaff and harpoon and the sail that was furled around the mast. the sail was patched with flour sacks and, furled, it looked like the flag of permanent defeat.the old man was thin and gaunt with deep wrin

4、kles in the back of his neck. the brown blotches of the benevolent skin cancer the sun brings from its reflection on the tropic sea were on his cheeks.the blotches ran well down the sides of his face and his hands had the deep-creased scars from handling heavy fish on the cords but none of these sca

5、rs were fresh. they were as old as erosions in a fishless desert.everything about him was old except his eyes and they were the same color as the sea and were cheerful and undefeated.santiago , the boy said to him as they climbed the bank from where the skiff was hauled up. i could go with you again

10、 ice truck to carry them to the market in havana. those who had caught sharks had taken them to the shark factory on the other side of the cove where they were hoisted on a block and tackle, their livers removed, their fins cut off and their hides skinned out and their flesh cut into strips for salt

11、ing.when the wind was in the east a smell came across the harbor from the shark factory; but today there was only the faint edge of the odor because the wind had backed into the north and then dropped off and it was pleasant and sunny on the terrace.santiago, the boy said. yes, the old man said. he

16、oday. i put them in salt in the box. let me get four fresh ones.one, the old man said. his hope and his confidence had never gone. but now they were freshening as when the breeze rises. two, the boy said. two, the old man agreed. you didnt steal them? i would, the boy said. but i bought these.thank

19、et him to come out after dolphin. are his eyes that bad? he is almost blind. it is strange, the old man said. he never went turtle-ing. that is what kills the eyes. from the old man and the sea譯文 老人與海 美海明威他一個老人,劃著小船獨(dú)自在墨西哥灣中捕魚;八十四天了還沒有捕到過一條魚。最初的四十天里,小男孩一直都跟著他,而四十天后,男孩的父母便告訴孩子說:這老人的運(yùn)氣肯定是跌到了谷底,簡直就是倒霉透頂

20、了。于是男孩在他父母親的命令下,轉(zhuǎn)到了另外一條船上去捕魚,結(jié)果不出一個星期,就捕到了三條大魚。然而,男孩看著老人日復(fù)一日駕著那空空的小船回來,總是為他感到難過。因此總會在老人回來時,上前幫忙提繩索、魚鉤、魚叉以及從船桅上卸下的船帆等。老人的船帆上滿是用面粉袋做成的補(bǔ)釘,使得帆布卷起來時,好似一面象征無限敗戰(zhàn)的旗幟。老人消瘦、憔悴,頸后有很深的皺紋。而從熱帶海洋的海面上反射出來的強(qiáng)烈陽光,在老人的雙頰上,留下了一塊塊良性皮膚癌棕色的斑點(diǎn)。老人除了兩頰布滿斑點(diǎn),雙手則刻著深深的勒痕,那是操作粗魚繩的結(jié)果。這些疤痕沒有一處是新的傷口,它們就如同一個了無生機(jī)的沙漠所經(jīng)歷過的侵蝕那樣久遠(yuǎn)。老人是這么的蒼

21、老,但唯有雙眼依舊有著像海水一樣的顏色,既充滿了歡愉,也好像是從來沒有被打敗過似的。小船被拖曳上岸,老人與男孩爬上了岸邊時,小男孩向老人說:山帝亞哥,我可以再跟你一起去捕魚,我們也曾經(jīng)一起賺過一些錢。老人曾經(jīng)教導(dǎo)小男孩如何捕魚,而男孩也很敬愛這位老人。不,老人說:你現(xiàn)在跟上的是一條幸運(yùn)的船,要好好繼續(xù)待在那兒。但是你記得嗎?曾經(jīng)有一次,一連八十七天都沒有捕到魚,然后接下來連續(xù)三個禮拜,每天都有捕到大魚呢。我記得,老人說:而且我也知道,你并不是因?yàn)閷ξ沂バ判亩x棄我。是爸爸要我離開你的。我是個小孩,我必須要聽他的話。我了解,老人說:這是很正常的事。他太沒有信心了。他們是沒有,老人說:但是我們有

22、呀,不是嗎?是啊,男孩說:讓我先請你到露天酒店喝杯啤酒,然后我們再一起把這些東西拿回家去吧。好啊,老人說:打漁的都是一家人嘛。當(dāng)他們在露天酒店坐下時,許多先前就待在那兒的漁夫都在嘲笑老人,而他并沒有因此生氣;其它一些年紀(jì)較長的漁夫只是看著他,為他難過,不過他們并沒有把這份同情表露出來,只是很禮貌地談?wù)撝裉斓乃髑闆r、魚線所垂釣的深度、穩(wěn)定的好天氣,以及海上的所見所聞。當(dāng)天有魚獲的幾個漁夫都已經(jīng)回來了,他們將捕到的馬林魚剖腹處理后,攤平放在兩塊厚木板上,一頭一個人抬著,兩人抬著魚搖搖晃晃地走進(jìn)魚屋,等著冷凍車來將他們載往哈瓦那的市場去。而那些捕到鯊魚的漁夫,也已經(jīng)把那些鯊魚送到在小海灣另一邊的鯊魚工廠去了,在那兒鯊魚被滑輪垂吊起來,然后被取下肝、割掉鰭、剝下皮,肉也被割成條狀準(zhǔn)備用鹽來腌。每當(dāng)東風(fēng)吹起,鯊魚工廠的魚腥味便飄過港灣吹過來,但是今天只能嗅到一些微弱的腥味,因?yàn)轱L(fēng)向已轉(zhuǎn)往北方,且逐漸平息了,露天酒店上陽光充足而宜人。山帝雅哥,男孩叫著。喔!老人應(yīng)了一聲。他手握著酒杯,正沈浸在多年前的往事回憶中。我可以出去幫你準(zhǔn)備明天要用的沙丁魚嗎?不,你去玩棒球吧。我還可以自己劃船,而且羅吉里奧委會替我撒網(wǎng)的。我想要跟你一道去。即使我不能跟你一起捕魚,至少我可以在旁邊幫幫忙。你請我喝啤酒了啊,老人說,你已經(jīng)是一個大人了。你第一次你帶我上船的時候,我是幾歲呢?五歲
