LucyandJorgeLucyOrta,ChairofArtandtheEnvironment,UniversityoftheArtsLondon.JorgeOrta,ScientificCommitteeoftheSchoolofArchitectureofVersailles VeniceBiennale, WeinerSecessioninVienna,Austira BarbicanArtGalleryinLondon, FondazioneBevilacquaLaMasainVenice, MuseumBoijmansVanBeuningeninRotterdam, GreenLeafAwardforartisticexcellencewithanenvironmentalmessage,presentedbytheUnitedNationsEnvironmentProgrammeinpartnershipwiththeNaturalWorldMuseumattheNobelPeaceCenterinOslo,Norway BiennialofoftheWorld,Ushuaia,andtheAntarcticPeninsula GalleriaContinuainBeijing,SanGimignano,andLeMoulinHangarBicoccaspaziod’arteinMilan,NaturalHistoryMuseum,London,ShanghaiBiennale,Shanghai,MAXXINationalMuseumofXXICenturyArtsinRome,YorkshireSculpturePark,Nexus“Eachindividualkeepsaneyeon,andprotects,theother.Oneindividual’slifedependsonthelifeoftheother.InLucy’swork,thewarmthofonegiveswarmthtotheother.Thephysicallinkweavesasociallink.”FrenchurbanphilosopherPaulVirilowroteabouttheNexusArchitecture,whenOrtabeganphysicallyconnectingpeopletogetherwithherwearablesculptureintheearly1990’s.ThebodyofworkNexusArchitecture(1994-2004)isregardedasanemblemofLucy+JorgeOrta’spractice.Thework,whichisbothaninstallationandperformativeismadeupofgroupsofworkers-overalls,inter-connectedv ystemofchannelsandzipperscalledthe‘Nexus’.Nexusmeanslinkorbondandtheconnectingelementsareseenasdirectembodimentsofthenotionofsociallink-a‘socialsculpture’.Duringtheperformances,thesuitsarewornforephemeral‘interventions’inpubliclocationsandthesehavetakenplaceindifferentcitiesaroundtheworldsince1994.Duringtheseinterventionsperformersandpassers-by ephysicallyinvolvedintheconstructionofchoreographedscenariosandtheparticipantsinteractwiththeircitylandscapethroughtheactionsof‘climbing’intothesuits,zipperingtheNexus.Theinterlinkedperformerscreatepowerfulmetaphorsofourinterconnectednesstoeachotherandquestioninghumaninterdependencebybeingphysicallypartoftheaction.Theinterventionsarefilmedandphotographedtocreate oftheInOrta’swork,theunderstandingsofclothesasmarkersofsocial/groupdifferencesormanifestationsofindividualpseudo-differencesarechallenged.Clothing esthemediumthroughwhichsociallinksandbondsarevisualised,bothliterallyandmetaphoricallythroughthelinksofzippersandchannels.Theuniformityofthegarment–aworkersoverall–createsanandrogynousshapethatdefiesclassificationbytheusualsocialmarkers,sotheNexusArchitectureattemptstogiveformtothesocial,nottheindividualbody. Insteadofdifferences,weareofferedapowerfulvisionofpossible,momentarycollectivesornetworksofbeing,whoserecurringconnectionsarerenderedvisiblean
