Withtheincreasingdemandfornovelpersonalcareproducts,theunderstandingoffrictionalpropertiesofskinhasbecomeacrucialareaofresearch.Frictionbetweenskinandvariousmaterialsisanimportantaspecttoevaluatetheperformanceofskincareproducts.Skinfrictioncanaffecttheslipperinessorstickinessofpersonalcareproductsappliedtotheskin,therefore,hasanimpactontheirefficacy.Theaimofthisstudyistointroduceanewexperimentalapproachtomeasurethefrictionalpropertiesofskinandevaluateitseffectiveness.

MaterialsandMethods

Theexperimentalsetupconsistsofacustomizedfrictiontesterintegratedwithahigh-speedcamera.Asampleholderismountedonthefrictiontesterwithacapacityofapplyingacontrolledloadontotheskinsurface.ACCDcamerawithamacrolenscapturesthecontactbetweenthesampleandtheskinsurface.IlluminationisprovidedbyaLEDlightsource.Asoftwareprogramandacomputersystemareusedtocontroltheappliedload,measurements,anddataanalysis.

Acontrolledpressureisappliedtotheskinsampleviathesampleholderforafixeddurationwhilethehigh-speedcamerarecordsthismovementsimultaneously.Duringthistime,softskintissuepressesdownthematerial,causingdeformationsthatleadtofrictionalforces.Thefrictionalcoefficient(μ)isdeterminedbycalculatingtheratioofthetangentialforce(Ft)tothenormalforce(Fn).

Thefrictiontestwasperformedonninedifferentskinsamplesfromdifferentindividuals,andtheresultswereevaluated.

Results

Thenewexperimentalmethodallowedforthemeasurementofthefrictionalcharacteristicsofdifferenttypesofskinwithhighprecision.Theaveragecoefficientoffrictionofdryskinwasfoundtobe0.62,whereastheaveragecoefficientoffrictionofwetskinwasfoundtobe0.28.Thisimpliesthattheskinhasalowercoefficientoffrictionwhenitismoisturized.Thefrictionalcoefficientwasfoundtobesignificantlylowerinareasoftheskinwithahigherconcentrationofsweatglands,ascomparedtoareaswithfewersweatglands.Theresultsdemonstratedthatahighermoisturecontentoftheskinleadstoadecreasedcoefficientoffriction.

Discussion

Thenewlydevelopedexperimentalmethodhasvariousadvantagesovertheexistingtechniques,including:(1)itallowsforthemeasurementofthefrictionalcharacteristicsofdifferenttypesofskinwithhighprecision,(2)itprovidesreal-timevisualizationofthefrictionprocess,and(3)itenablestheevaluationoftheeffectofothervariablessuchassweatglanddistributionandmoistureonthefrictioncoefficient.

Conclusion
