Vascularheadaches

Womenaremoreeasytosuffermigrainesthanaremen,andacertainpersonalitytypecompulsive,perfectionist,andverysuccessorientedseemstobemorelikelytobeaffectedwithmigraineheadaches.

Causes

Anumberofphysicalandemotionalfactorsmaycontributetomigraineheadaches.Migrainesmaybetriggeredbyasharpreductionincaffeineintakeorbyallergiestocertainfoods.Emotionalstresscanalsocausemigraineheadaches,ascandrinkingalcohol,smoking,oraninterruptioninroutineeatingandsleepinghabits(allofwhichmayberesponsiblefor"weekend"headachessufferedbysomepatients).Cyclical,seasonal,oremotionalfactorsmayalsobeassociatedwiththetendencytodevelopmigraineheadaches.Atendencytodevelopthistypeofheadachemaybeinherited.

Symptoms

Thepredominantsymptomofamigraineheadacheisasharppainononeorbothsidesofthehead.Paleness,sweating,andsensitivitytolightmayaccompanythepain.Awarningsensationmayindicateanapproachingmigraineheadache.Beforethepainbegins,someindividualsmayseeflashinglightsor"shootingstars",hearnoises,orhaveanuncomfortablefeelinginthearmsorlegs.

Diagnosis

Vascularheadachesarediagnosedbyacarefulreviewofthecircumstancessurroundingtheheadachesaswellasbyaphysicalexaminationtoruleoutanyotherdisorderthatmightbecausingthesymptoms.Eliminationtestsmaybedonetoidentifytheexactcauseofmigrainessufferedbypeoplewhoseemtoreacttocertainfoodsorchangesineatingandsleepinghabits.Inaneliminationtest,allthesubstancesthataresuspectedofcausingthetroubleareeliminatedandthenreintroducedoneatatimetoidentifythespecificcauseofthemigraineheadaches.

Treatment

Treatmentofamigrainealreadyinprogressusuallyconsistsofadrugtherapyprogramchosenfromavarietyofpainkillers,tranquilizers,andspecialprescribedmedications.

Prevention
