2017海天教育講Thegreatestadvantageofbooksdoesnotalwayscomefromwhatwerememberofthem,butfromtheirsuggestiveness.Agoodbookoftenservesasamatchtolightthedormantpowderwithinus.Thereisexplosivematerialenoughinmostofusifwecanonlyreachit.Agoodbookoragoodfriendoftenservestowakeupourlatentpossibilities.Booksoftenexcitethoughtingreatwriters,evenuponentirelydifferentsubjects.Weoftenfindinbookswhatwethoughtandfelt,couldwehaveexpressedourselves.Indeed,wegetacquaintedwithourselvesinbooks.WediscoveronefeatureinEmerson,anotherlineamentinShakespeare,anexpressioninHomer,aglimpseofourselvesinDante,andsoonuntilwespelloutourwholeindividuality.True,wegetmanypleasingreflectionsofourselvesfromfriends,manymirroreddeformitiesfromourenemies,andacharacteristichereandtherefromtheworld;butinacalmandunbiasedwaywefindthemostofourselves,ourstrength,ourweakness,ourlimitations,ouropinions,ourtastes,ourharmoniesanddiscords,ourpoeticandprosaicqualities,inbooks.Weformmanyofouropinionsfromourfavoritebooks.Theauthorwhompreferisourmostpotentteacher;welookattheworldthroughhiseyes.Ifwehabituallyreadbooksthatareelevatingintone,pureinstyle,soundinreasoning,andkeenininsight,ourmindsdevelopthesamecharacteristics.If,onthecontrary,wereadweakorviciousbooks,ourmindscontractthefaultsandvicesofthebooks.Wecannotescapetheinfluenceofwhatwereadanymorethanwecanescapetheinfluenceoftheairthatwebreathe.Thebestbooksarethosewhichstirusupmostandmakeusthemostdeterminedtodosomethingandbesomethingourselves.Thebestbooksarethosewhichliftustoahighernewherewebreatheapureratmosphere.Asweshouldassociatewithpeoplewhocaninspireustonoblerdeeds,soweshouldonlyreadthosebookswhichhaveanupliftingpower,andwhichstirustomakethemostofourselvesandourLibrariesarenolongeraluxury,butanecessity.Ahomewithoutbooksandperiodicalsandnewspapersislikeahousewithoutwindows.Childrenlearntoreadbybeinginthemidstofbooks;theyunconsciouslyabsorbknowledgebyhandlingthem.Nofamilycannowaffordtobewithoutgoodreading.Furnishyourhousewithbooksratherthanunnecessaryfurniture,bric-a-brac,orevenpicturesifyoucannotaffordall.Oneofthemostincongruoussightsintheworldisaneleganthousewithcostlyfurniture,paintingsofthemasters,importedtapestries,statuary,costlycarpets,extravagantfrescoes,andyetwithscarcelyastandardworkinthelibrary.Wearthreadbareclothesandpatchedshoesifnecessary,butdonotpinchoreconomizeonbooks.Ifyoucannotgiveyourchildrenanacademiceducationyoucancewithintheirreachafewgoodbookswhichwillliftthemabovetheirsurroundings,intoresponsibilityandhonour.Acollegeeducation,oritsequivalent,andmoreispossibletothepoorestboyorgirlwhohasaccesstothenecessarybooks.Whateveryouread,readwithenthusiasm,withenergy,readwiththewholemind,ifyouwouldincreaseyourmentalstature.Learntoabsorbthementalandthemorallifeofabook,andassimilateitintoyourlife.Heisthebestreaderwhoconsumesthemostknowledgeandconvertsitintocharacter.Mechanicalreadersrememberwords,thehusksofthings,butdigestnothing.Theycramtheirbrainsbutstarvetheirminds.Ifyouaregettingthemostoutofabook,youwillfeelacapacityforngthingswhichyouneverfeltbefore.27Thegreatestadvantageof
