Unit5IntotheWildTheMonarch’sJourneyManyanimalsmovefromoneplacetoanotheratcertaintimesoftheyear.Thisannualmovementiscalledmigration.Theymigratetofindfood,seekapartner,orinsearchofwarmerweather.OneofthemostwonderfulmigrationsinnatureisthatoftheNorthAmericanmonarchbutterfly.Everyautumn,millionsofthesebeautifulinsectswithfineblackandorangewingsbeginalonganddifficultjourney.Somehowtheymanagetotravelaround4,000kilometressouthandfindtheirwaytoCaliforniaorMexico.However,untilrecentlynooneknewhowtheydidthis.AteamofscientistsledbyProfessorEliShlizermanattheUniversityofWashingtonhasnowfoundtheanswer.Theyhavefoundoutthatthemonarchisabletotellthetimeofday.Itusesitseyestomeasurethepositionofthesun.Thesetwopiecesofinformation—thetimeofdayandthepointwherethesunisinthesky—allowthebutterflytodeterminethewaytogo.Eventually,itmanagestoreachtheplaceswhereitwillspendthewinter.Thesolutiontothemysteryofthemonarch’samazingabilitycomesatatimewhenitisinserioustrouble.Itspopulationhascrashedbyasmuchas90percentinthelastfewyears.Sadly,humanactivityisthemainreasonwhythenumberofmonarchbutterfliesisfalling.Inmanyoftheplaceswherethebutterflycanbefound,peoplearedestroyingthenaturalenvironment.Theycutdowntreesandusechemicalsthatkilltheplantsthatmonarchcaterpillarseat.Theresearchonthemonarch’sbehaviourhashoweverledtoagreaterawarenessofthiscreature.Peoplehavebeenworkingtogethertorecorditsmigrationandmakesurethatthereareenoughplantsforittofeedon.Ifthisworks,theremaycomeatimewhenthenumberofmonarchbutterfliesincreasesonceagain.Themoreweknowaboutthislovelycreature,thegreaterthechanceitwillsurviveandkeepitsplaceinthenaturalworldforalongtimetocome.AnEncounterwithNatureAsanaturephotographer,Ihavetobravetheelements.Butdespitethewindandtherain,Istillenjoyworkingoutsideinthewild.Oneofthebestthingsaboutthisjobisthatyoucanobserveanimalsintheirnaturalenvironment.MyfavouriteplacetotakephotosisYellowstoneNationalPark.Astheworld’sfirstnationalpark,Yellowstoneisfamousforthevarietyofitswildlife,butitisprobablybestknownforitsbears.Thesehuge,stronganimalscanlivefor30years.Despiteaweightofupto300kilograms,theycanrunataspeedofaround64kilometresperhourandarealsoexcellentswimmers.LastspringinYellowstone,Ifollowedapaththattookmethroughadarkforest.WhenIfinallysteppedoutofthetrees,theviewwasbreathtaking.Aneagleflewoverthesnow-cappedmountains,whichwerereflectedinthestilllakebelow.WhileIwasconcentratingonphotographingthisamazingscene,IsuddenlyhadafeelingthatIwasbeingwatched.Slowly,andwiththecamerastillheldtomyeye,Iturned...andfroze.Onlymetersawayfrommewasabear.Withwaterfallingoffitsthick,brownhair,thebearstaredbackatme.TimestoodstillasthebearandIbothwaitedtoseewhowouldmovefirst.Mylegsstartedshaking.Somehow,Iforcedmyfingertopressthebutton.Asecondlater,thebearturnedandranbackintotheforest.WhenIrecoveredfromtheshock,Ilookedatmycamera.Mymostfrighteningbutmagicalexperiencewasnowcapturedforeverinasingleimage.FromtimetotimeIlookatthephotoasaremindertoshowrespecttoallanimals.Itisafterallwewhoarethevisitorstotheirworld.ADAYINTHECLOUDSTheairisthinandwehavetorestseveraltimesontheshorthikefromcamp.Toourleft,snow-coveredmountainsdisappearintocloudsthatseemalmostcloseenoughtotouch.Ontheplaininfrontofus,wecanjustmakeoutaherdofgracefulanimals.Thisiswhywe’rehere—toobserveTibetanantelopes.TibetanantelopesliveontheplainsofTibet,Xinjiang,andQinghai.Watchingthemmoveslowlyacrossthegreengrass.I’mstruckbytheirbeauty.I’malsoremindedofthedangertheyarein.Theyarebeinghunted,illegally,fortheirvaluablefur.MyguideisZhaxi,avillagefromChangtang.HeworksattheChangtangNationalNatureReserve.ThereserveisashelterfortheanimalsandplantsofnorthwesternTibet.ToZhaxi,thelandissacredandprotectingthewildlifeisawayoflife.“We’renottryingtosavetheanimals,”hesays.“Actually,we’retryingtosaveourselves.”The1980sand1990swerebadtimesfortheTibetanantelope.Thepopulationdroppedbymorethan50percent.Hunterswereshootingantelopestomakeprofits.Theirhabitatswerebecomingsmallerasnewroadsandrailwayswerebuilt.Inordertosavethisspeciesfromextinction,theChinesegovernmentplaceditundernationalprotection.Zhaxiandothervolunteerswatchedovertheantelopesdayandnighttokeepthemsafefromattacks.Bridgesandgateswereaddedtolettheantelopesmoveeasilyandkeepthemsafefromcarsandtrains.Themeasureswereeffective.TheantelopepopulationhasrecoveredandinJune2015,theTibetanantelopewasremovedfromtheendangeredspecieslist.Thegovernment,however,doesnotintendtostoptheprotectionprogrammes,sincethethreatstotheTibetanantelopehavenotyetdisappeared.Intheevening,Idrinkacupofteaandwatchthestars.IthinkabouttheantelopesandwhatZhaxitoldme.Muchisbeingdonetoprotectwildlife,butifwereallywanttosavetheplanet,wemustchangeourwayoflife.Onlywhenwelearntoexistinharmonywithnaturecanwestopbeingathreattowildlifeandtoourplanet.GiveUglyaChance!Whenitcomestowildlifeprotection,allspecies—thegood,thebad,andtheugly—shouldbetreatedequally.Pandas,dolphins,andothercutewildlifeareimportant,butwemustpayattentiontolesscuteanimals,too.Theworldneedsallkinds—withoutvariety,ourplanetcannotsurvive.Soifyouwantthefut
