Toothenamelisthehardestsubstanceinthehumanbodyandisresponsibleforprotectingourteethfromwearandtear.Thelossofenamelcanleadtodentalcavitiesandsensitiveteeth.Acidicfoodsanddrinkscanerodethetoothenamel,leadingtoitsloss.Amongtheacidicdrinksthatpeopleconsumeregularly,lemonjuiceisoneofthemosterosive.Inthisstudy,weinvestigatethefrictionalwearbehaviorofhumantoothenamelinalemonjuicemedium.

MaterialsandMethods

Inthisstudy,weusedhumantoothenamelspecimensextractedfromhealthyadultteeth.Thespecimensweremountedonapinonaspinningdiscmachine.Thespecimenswerethenexposedtoa5%lemonjuicesolution.Thetestswerecarriedoutfordurationsof60minutesand120minutesataslidingspeedof4cm/min.Thefrictionalforcesgeneratedbythespecimensduringthetestsweremeasuredusingaloadcell.

Results

Theresultsshowedthatthelossofenamelincreasedwithincreasingexposuretimetothelemonjuicesolution.After60minutesofexposure,theenamellosswaslessthan0.01mm,andafter120minutesofexposure,theenamellosswas0.02mm.Thefrictionalforcesgeneratedbythespecimensincreasedwithexposuretime,indicatinganincreaseinfrictionalwear.Onaverage,thefrictionalforcesgeneratedbythespecimensafter60minutesofexposurewere0.61N,andafter120minutesofexposure,theywere0.71N.

Discussion

Theresultsofthestudyindicatethatlemonjuicecancausesignificantweartohumantoothenamel.Thisisduetotheerosivenatureofthecitricacidinlemonjuice.Theerosionoftoothenamelcanleadtodentalcavities,sensitivity,anddiscoloration.Therefore,itisimportanttolimittheconsumptionofacidicdrinkssuchaslemonjuicetopreventtheerosionoftoothenamel.Additionally,properdentalhygienepracticessuchasbrushingtwiceadayandusingfluoridetoothpastecanalsohelppreventenamelloss.

Conclusion
