BatteryFETisFigure22.Typicalbq2416xChargingControllerinChargeThebq2416xprovidesanintegrated,fixed-frequency1.5MHzvoltage-modecontrollertopowerthesystemandsupplythechargecurrent.Thevoltageloopisinternallycompensatedandprovidesenoughphasemarginforstableoperation,allowingtheuseofsmallceramiccapacitorswithverylowESR.Theinputschemeforthebq2416xpreventsbatterydischargewhenthesupplyvoltagesarelowerthanVBATandalsoisolatesthetwoinputsfromeachother.Thehigh-sideN-MOSFET(Q1/Q2)switchestocontrolthepowerdeliveredtotheoutput.TheDRVLDOprovidesasupplyforthegatedriveforthelowsideMOSFET,whileabootstrapcircuit(BST)withanexternalbootstrapcapacitorisusedtoboostupthegatedrivevoltageforQ1andBothinputsareprotectedbyacycle-by-cyclecurrentlimitthatissensedthroughthehigh-sideMOSFETsforQ1andQ2.Thethresholdforthecurrentlimitissettoanominal5Apeakcurrent.Theinputsalsoutilizeaninputcurrentlimitthatlimitsthecurrentfromthepowersource.BatteryChargingWhenthebatteryisdeeplydischargedorshorted(VBAT<VBATSHRT),thebq2416xappliesIBATSHRTtoclosethepackprotectorswitchandbringthebatteryvoltageuptoacceptablecharginglevels.Duringthistime,thebatteryFETislinearlyregulatedandthesystemoutputisregulatedtoVSYS(REG).OncethebatteryrisesaboveVBATSHRT,thechargecurrentisregulatedtothevaluesetintheI2Cregister.ThebatteryFETislinearlyregulatedtomaintainthesystemvoltageatVSYS(REG).Undernormalconditions,thetimespentinthisregionisaveryshortpercentageofthetotalchargingtime,sothelinearregulationofthechargecurrentdoesnotaffecttheoverallchargingefficiencyforverylong.Ifthedietemperaturedoesrise,thethermalregulationcircuitreducesthechargecurrenttomaintainadietemperaturelessthan120°C.IfthecurrentlimitfortheSYSoutputisreached(limitedbytheinputcurrentlimit,orVIN_DPM),theSYSoutputdropstotheVMINSYSoutputvoltage.Whenthishappens,thechargecurrentisreducedtoprovidethesystemwithallthecurrentthatisneededwhilemaintainingtheminimumsystemvoltage.Ifthechargecurrentisreducedto0mA,pullingfurthercurrentfromSYScausestheoutputtofalltothebatteryvoltageandentersupplementmode.(SeetheDynamicPowerPathManagementsectionformoredetails.)OncethebatteryischargedenoughsothatthesystemvoltagebeginstoriseaboveVSYS(REG),thebatteryFETisturnedonfullyandthebatteryischargedwiththefullprogrammedchargecurrentsetbytheI2Cinterface,ICHARGE.Theslewrateforthefast-chargecurrentiscontrolledtominimizecurrentandvoltageovershootduringtransients.ThechargecurrentisregulatedtoICHARGEuntilthebatteryischargedtotheregulationvoltage.Oncethebatteryvoltageisclosetotheregulationvoltage,VBATREG,thechargecurrentistapereddownasshowninFigure22whiletheSYSoutputremainsconnectedtothebattery.Thevoltage-regulationfeedbackoccursbymonitoringthebattery-packvoltagebetweentheBATandPGNDpins.Thebq2416xisafixedsingle-cellvoltageversion,withadjustableregulationvoltage(3.5Vto4.44V),programmedusingtheI2Cinterface.Thebq2416xmonitorsthechargingcurrentduringthevoltage-regulationphase.Oncetheterminationthreshold,ITERM,isdetectedandthebatteryvoltageisabovetherechargethreshold,thebq2416xterminatescharge,turnsoffthebatterychargingFETandentersbatterydetection.ThesystemoutputisregulatedtotheVSYS(REG)andsupportsthefullcurrentavailablefromtheinputandthebatterysupplementmodeisavailable.(SeetheDynamicPowerPathManagementsectionformoredetails.)Theterminationcurrentlevelisprogrble.Todisablethechargecurrenttermination,thehostsetsthechargeterminationbit(TE)ofchargecontrolregisterto0,refertoI2Csectionfordetails.AnewchargecycleisinitiatedwhenoneofthefollowingconditionsisThebatteryvoltagefallsbelowtheVBATREG-VRCHVSUPPLYCEbittoggleorRESETbitisHI-ZbitBatteryWhenterminationconditionsaremet,abatterydetectioncycleisstarted.Duringbatterydetection,IDETECTispulledfromVBATfortDETECTtoverifythereisabattery.IfthebatteryvoltageremainsaboveVDETECTforthefulldurationoftDETECT,abatteryisdeterminedtopresentandtheICenters“ChargeDone”.IfVBATfallsbelowVDETECT,a“BatteryNotPresent”faultissignaledandbatterydetectioncontinues.Thenextcycleofbatterydetection,thebq2416xturnsonIBATSHORTfortDETECT.IfVBATrisestoVDETECT,thecurrentsourceisturnedoffandaftertDETECT,thebatterydetectioncontinuesthroughanothercurrentsinkcycle.Batterydetectioncontinuesuntilchargeisdisabledorabatteryisdetected.Onceabatteryisdetected,thefaultstatusclearsandanewchargecyclebegins.Batterydetectionisnotrunwhenterminationisdisabled.DynamicPowerPathManagementThebq2416xfeaturesaSYSoutputthatpowerstheexternalsystemloadconnectedtothebattery.ThisoutputisactivewheneverasourceisconnectedtoIN,USBorBAT.ThefollowingsectionsdiscussthebehaviorofSYSwithasourceconnectedtothesupplyorabatterysourceonly.InputSourceWhenavalidinputsourceisconnected,thebuckconverterturnsontopowertheloadonSYS.TheSTAT/INTpinoutputsa128μsinterruptpulsetoalertthehostthataninputhasbeenconnected.TheFAULTbitsindicateanormalcondition,andtheSupplyStatusregisterindicatesthatanewsupplyisconnected.TheCEbit(bit1)inthecontrolregister(0x02)indicateswhetherachargecycleisinitiated.Bydefault,thebq2416x(CE=0)enablesachargecyclewhenavalidinputsourceisconnected.WhentheCEbitis'1'andavalidinputsourceisconnected,thebatteryFETisturnedoffandtheSYSoutputisregulatedtotheVSYS(REG)programmedbytheVBATREGthresholdintheI2Cregister.AchargecycleisinitiatedwhentheCEbitiswrittentoa0value(cleared).WhentheCEbitisa0andavalidsourceisconnectedtoINorUSB,thebuckconverterstartsupandachargecycleisinitiated.WhenVBATishighenoughthatVSYS>VSYS(REG),thebatteryFETisturnedonandtheSYSoutputisconnectedtoBAT.IftheSYSvoltagefallstoVSYS(REG),itisregulatedtothatpointtomaintainthesystemoutputevenwithadeeplydischargedorabsentbattery.Inthismode,theSYSoutputvoltageisregulatedbythebuckconverterandthebatteryFETlinearlyregulatesthechargecurrentintothebattery.ThecurrentfromthesupplyissharedbetweenchargingthebatteryandpoweringthesystemloadatSYS.Thedynamicpower-pathmanagement(DPPM)circuitryofthebq2416xmonitorsthecurrentlimitscontinuously,andiftheSYSvoltagefallstotheVMINSYSvoltage,itadjustschargecurrenttomaintaintheminimumsystemvoltageandsupplytheloadonSYS.Ifthechargecurrentisreducedtozeroandtheloadincreasesfurther,thebq2416xentersbattery-supplementmode.Duringsupplementmode,thebatteryFETisturnedonandthebatterysupplementsthesystem
