3.Post-graduateCrazeCoolsOffThepost-graduatecrazehaslongsincebeenahotissueonmostcampusesaroundthecountry.AccordingtothestatisticsreleasedbyShanghaiEducationalTestInstitute79299studentsinShanghaisatinforthepost-graduateentranceexamsin2003adramaticriseof32.6%overthepreviousyear.Theyearof2003isthetenthyearsincethenumberofpostgraduatetesttakersbegantogrowrapidlyandsteadily.Howeversincethentherisinglinehasgraduallyplateauedyearbyyearwithamodestriseof6.7%1.8%2.1%respectivelyin200420052006.In2007thenumberoftesttakersevendroppedby6.5%incomparisonwith2006.Allthesestatisticspointtoaninterestingphenomenonthepost-graduatetestafteraten-yearcrazeisstartingtocooloff.Threemajorfactorsaccountforthecoolingoffofthepost-graduatecraze.Oneisthepost-graduateeducationreform.Post-graduatestudentsusedtoenjoyamodestgovernmentsubsidyfortheirthreeyearstudies.Butaccordingtothenewgraduateprogramtheyhavetopayforalltheirlivingandlearningexpenses.Facedwiththerisingeducationcostssomestudentshesitatetoapplyfortheteat.Anotherfactoristhepressurefromtheincreasinglycompetitivejobmarket.Manystudentsusedtobelievethatthemoreeducationtheyreceivedthebetterjobopportunitiestheywouldhave.Withtheexpandedenrollmentforbothundergraduatesandpost-graduatesjobhuntbecomesmoreandmoredifficult.Manystudentsfearthatwhentheyfinishtheirpost-graduatestudiesthepositionswillhavebeenalreadyoccupied.Moreovermanycompaniespreferexperiencedemployeestonewgraduateswhotendtoknownothingbutimpracticalbookknowledge.Asaresultsomestudentsdecidetostartworkearlysoastoaccumulatemoreworkexperiences.Inmyopinionbeforewemakethechoiceweneedtothinktwice.WhatkindofjobdoIreallywanttodo?Doesthejobrequirepracticalworkexperienceortheoreticalknowledge?CanthegraduateprogramofferwhatIwanttolearn?Ourfinaldecisionshouldbebasedonourpersonalsituations.Post-graduateCrazeCoolsOffThepost-graduatecrazehaslongsincebeenahotissueonmostcampusesaroundthecountry.AccordingtothestatisticsreleasedbyShanghaiEducationalTestInstitute,79,299studentsinShanghaisatinforthepost-graduateentranceexamsin2003,adramaticriseof32.6%overthepreviousyear.Theyearof2003isthetenthyearsincethenumberofpostgraduatetesttakersbegantogrowrapidlyandsteadily.However,sincethen,therisinglinehasgraduallyplateauedyearbyyear,withamodestriseof6.7%,1.8%,2.1%respectivelyin2004,2005,2006.In2007,thenumberoftesttakersevendroppedby6.5%incomparisonwith2006.Allthesestatisticspointtoaninterestingphenomenonthepost-graduatetest,afteraten-yearcraze,isstartingtocooloff.Threemajorfactorsaccountforthecoolingoffofthepost-graduatecraze.Oneisthepost-graduateeducationreform.Post-graduatestudentsusedtoenjoyamodestgovernmentsubsidyfortheirthreeyearstudies.Butaccordingtothenewgraduateprogram,theyhavetopayforalltheirlivingandlearningexpenses.Facedwiththerisingeducationcosts,somestudentshesitatetoapplyfortheteat.Anotherfactoristhepressurefromtheincreasinglycompetitivejobmarket.Manystudentsusedtobelievethatthemoreeducationtheyreceived,thebetterjobopportunitiestheywouldhave.Withtheexpandedenrollmentforbothundergraduatesandpost-graduates,jobhuntbecomesmoreandmoredifficult.Manystudentsfearthatwhentheyfinishtheirpost-graduatestudies,thepositionswillhavebeenalreadyoccupied.Moreover,manycompaniespreferexperiencedemployeestonewgraduateswhotendtoknownothingbutimpracticalbookknowledge.Asaresult,somestudentsdecidetostartworkearlysoastoaccumulatemoreworkexperiences.Inmyopinion,beforewemakethechoice,weneedtothinktwice.WhatkindofjobdoIreallywanttodo?Doesthejobrequirepracticalworkexperienceortheoreticalknowledge?CanthegraduateprogramofferwhatIwanttolearn?Ourfinaldecisionshouldbebasedonourpersonalsituations.
4.BuyingBooksorBorrowingBooks?Bookscanarmuswithknowledgeandinformationweneedforsuccessfullives.Therearegenerallytwowaysinwhichwecanhaveaccesstobooks:borrowingorbuying.Manypeoplechoosetoborrowbooks.Foronethingborrowingbookscansaveushugeamountsofmoney.Foranotherifweborrowbooksfromthelibraryorfriendswenormallyhavedeadlinetofinishthem.ConsequentlywecanreadmorebooksinalimitedtimejustasafamousChinesesayinggoes"bookscannotbereadunlessborrowed."Someothersbelievethatadvantagesofbuyingbooksaremoreobviousandcompelling.Firstlywecankeepthebooksaslongaswewishandthenreadthemcarefullyorevenoverandoveragain.Secondlywecantakewhatevernotesonthemarginofthepagesofthebooks.Finallytheprocessofselectingandkeepingbookscanbeagreatfun.Despitealltheaboveargumentsmychoiceistoborrowbooksforwhichonlyskimmingisenoughandtobuybooksforwhichcarefulreadingisneeded.BuyingBooksorBorrowingBooks?Bookscanarmuswithknowledgeandinformationweneedforsuccessfullives.Therearegenerallytwowaysinwhichwecanhaveaccesstobooks:borrowingorbuying.Manypeoplechoosetoborrowbooks.Foronething,borrowingbookscansaveushugeamountsofmoney.Foranother,ifweborrowbooksfromthelibraryorfriends,wenormallyhavedeadlinetofinishthem.Consequentlywecanreadmorebooksinalimitedtime,justasafamousChinesesayinggoes,"bookscannotbereadunlessborrowed."Someothersbelievethatadvantagesofbuyingbooksaremoreobviousandcompelling.Firstly,wecankeepthebooksaslongaswewishandthenreadthemcarefullyorevenoverandoveragain.Secondly,wecantakewhatevernotesonthemarginofthepagesofthebooks.Finally,theprocessofselectingandkeepingbookscanbeagreatfun.Despitealltheabovearguments,mychoiceistoborrowbooksforwhichonlyskimmingisenoughandtobuybooksforwhichcarefulreadingisneeded.
5.EvaluationbyStudentsNowadaysagrowingnumberofuniversitieshavelaunchedthe"StudentEvaluationProject"inwhichstudentsareinvitedtoevaluatethejobperformanceoftheirteachers.Inmostcasesstudentsgetevaluationformsattheendofasemesterandareaskedtofillthemoutanonymously.Therearevariedopinionsamongteachersanduniversityauthoritiesaboutthiseducationalreformprogram.Universityadministratorsconsiderstudentevaluationtobeaneffectivemeanstodisciplineteachersandhelpenhancetheteachingquality.Howevermanyteachersfeeluncomfortableevenresentfulaboutitbecausedifferentstudentsmayhavedifferentstandardsbywhichtojudgetheirteachers.Intheiropiniontheevaluationresultsmaybeinfluencedbyindividualstudent'spersonalfeelingsandthereforecan'tbecountedonasanobjectivereflectionoftheteachingperformance.Asforstudentstheirattitudesarealsovaried:someliketobegivenavoicetoexpresstheirviewssomedon'tunderstanditwhilesomesimplydon'tcare.AsawholeStudentEvaluationProjecttookaboldstepintheuniversityeducationreformprocesswhichencouragesstudentstogetmoreactivelyinvolvedintheclassteachingthuspositivelycreatinganinteractiveacademicatmosphere.Neverthelessmanyotherproblemsmayarisecorrespondingly.Forinstancesomestudentsmaybetoocriticalaboutacertainprofessorjustbecausetheprofessorisnotfunorheistoostrictwhichmighthaveanegativeimpactontheimpartialityofevaluationitselfmisleadingthereformorientation.EvaluationbyStudentsNowadays,agrowingnumberofuniversitieshavelaunchedthe"StudentEvaluationProject",inwhichstudentsareinvitedtoevaluatethejobperformanceoftheirteachers.Inmostcases,studentsgetevaluationformsattheendofasemesterandareaskedtofillthemoutanonymously.Tgram.Universityadministratorsconsiderstudentevaluationtobeaneffectivemeanstodisciplineteachersandhelpenhancetheteachingquality.However,manyteachersfeeluncomfortable,evenresentfulaboutit,becausedifferentstudentsmayhavedifferentstandardsbywhichtojudgetheirteachers.Intheiropinion,theevaluationresultsmaybeinfluencedbyindividualstudent'spersonalfeelingsandthereforecan'tbecountedonasanobjectivereflectionoftheteachingperformance.Asforstudents,theirattitudesarealsovaried:someliketobegivenavoicetoexpresstheirviews,somedon'tunderstandit,whilesomesimplydon'tcare.Asawhole,StudentEvaluationPcess,whichencouragesstudentstogetmoreactivelyinvolvedintheclassteaching,thuspositivelycreatinganinteractiveacademicatmosphere.Nevertheless,many,otherproblemsmayarisecorrespondingly.Forinstance,somestudentsmaybetoocriticalaboutacertainprofessorjustbecausetheprofessorisnotfunorheistoostrict,whichmighthaveanegativeimpactontheimpartialityofevaluationitself,misleadingthereform.orientation.
