Ironicallywordprocessingisinsomewayspsychologicallymore

likewritinginroughthantyping,sinceitrestoresfluidity

andprovisionalitytothetext.Thetypist(sdreadofhaving

togetouttheTippex,thescissorsandpaste,orofredoing

thewholethingifhehasanysubstantialsecondthoughts,can

makehimconsistentlychoosethesaferoptioninhissentences,

orletsomethingstandwhichheknowstobeunsatisfactoryor

incomplete,outofweariness.Inwordprocessingthetextis

loosenedupwhilststillretainingtheadvantageoflooking

formallyfinished.

Thishas,Ithink,twoapparentlycontradictoryeffects.The

initialwritingcanbecomeexcessivelysloppyandcareless,in

theexpectationthatitwillbecorrectedlater.Thatcrucial

firstinspirationisnevereasytorecapture,though,and

therefore,ontheotherhand,thewritingcanbecome

over-deliberated,lackinginflowandspontaneity,since

revisionbecomesalargerpartofcomposition.However,these

arefaultseasiertodetectinothersthaninoneself.Myown

experienceofthesheerdifficultyofcommittinganywordsat

alltothepagemeansI'mgratefulforallthehelpIcanget.

Formostwriters,wordprocessingquiterapidlycomestofeel

liketheidealmethod(andcanalwaysbeasecondstepafter

draftingonpaperifyouprefer).Mostofthewriters

interviewedbyHammondsayithasimprovedtheirstyle,

("immensely”,saysDeighton).Seeingyourownwordonascreen

helpsyoutofeelcoolanddetachedaboutthem.

Thusisnotjustbyfreeingyoufrom-thelaborofmechanical

retypingthatawordprocessorcanhelpyoutowrite.Oneauthor

(TerenceFeely)claimsithasincreasedhisoutputby400%.

Possiblythefeelingofhavingareactivemachine,which

appearstodothings,ratherthanjusthavethingsdonewith

it,accountsforthis一yourslaveworkshardandsodoyou.

Aretherenodrawbacks?Itcostsalotandtakestimeto

learn-"expecttoloseweeksofwork”,saysHammond,though

daysmightbenearerthemark.Notoriouslyitispossibleto

loseworkaltogetheronawordprocessor,andthishappensto

everybodyatleastonce.Theawarenessthatwhatyouhave
