English is spoken by about 400 million people in Australia, Britain, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa and the USA. In Ghana, India, Nigeria and Singapore, English is used for government, education and trade, although there are many other languages for everyday use. In China and most other countries, its the most important foreign language that children will learn at school, because its essential for tourism, international business, entertainment, radio, television, newspapers, and the Internet. So English is now used by about 1.5 billion people - or a quarter of the worlds population, and wherever you go in the world, there is a good chance that someone will speak English. How did this happen? English has not always been the most common language. Until English became important in the 20th century, people who had any education spoke French. Whats more, English spelling doesnt give much help with pronunciation, and its grammar is difficult, especially the word order. The reason is that in the 18th century, the UK was a country whose industrial products were sold all over the world. In the 20th century, the USA spread English all over the world through newspapers, television, films, and advertising. Its now the common language for international travel, science, industry and in recent years, information technology and the Internet. But its also important to remember that English has borrowed many words from other languages, either exactly the same word or very similar. It uses restaurant from French, zero from Arabic, piano from Italian, and typhoon, china and many others words from Chinese. Will the importance of English last? Many people think that, if China continues to grow in importance, Chinese will become as common as English by the middle of the 21st century. More and more schools in Europe are teaching Chinese as a foreign language, in place of other European language. And tourism puts China into the top 10 countries for visitors. But at least for the next 20 or 30 years, English will be the language used most widely. So who owns English? The answer is everyone who speaks it - the English, the Indians and the Chinese all help make it a rich language. It changes every year with new words and expressions. Even though there are differences in grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation and spelling, we all belong to the international English speaking world. We all own English. 56. In a country like India, English is _. A. not taught in school B. spoken by everyone C. the most important foreign language D. not the language everyone speaks at home 57. English became more common because _. A. of the growth of the UK B. its an easy language to learn C. it was used in television, films and the Internet D. it was sold like an industrial product 58. English has many words which _. A. are difficult to remember B. first came from other languages C. look as if they come from another language D. are important to remember 59. In the middle of the twenty-first century, Chinese _. A. may replace English as international language B. will be taught in all schools as a foreign language C. will be used as widely as English D. wont be used as widely as English B Vanessa-Mae The young violinist Vanessa-Mae was the first musician to use techno, dance and rock music in traditional classical music. Vanessa-Mae loved pop music, and she was also a very good classical violinist, and she brought the two kinds of music together. Vanessa-Mae was born in Singapore on October 27, 1978. She moved to London with her family when she was four. A year later, she started to learn the violin. When she was eight, she went to Beijing to study the violin. When she was ten, she played with a very famous group of classical musicians. But Vanessa-Mae doesnt only play the violin. She learnt the piano before she started to play the violin. She likes lots of different kinds of music, from Beethoven to the Beatles, and she wants to play the music she likes. Not only has she played in classical concerts all over the world, but she has also played in pop concerts with pop stars. A lot of people dont like the way she uses modern rhythms, noisy drums and guitars in traditional music. C Department stores sell ready-to-wear clothing, which is also called ready-made clothing. Such clothing is made in fixed sizes. Those people who find that ready-made clothing fits them well can save money by buying it. Most often, people do not fit exactly into a producers size. Their clothing must be altered (改變 ) to make it fit better. However, most alterations are not very expensive. The small cost of most alterations means that ready-made clothing can meet the needs of most customers. Those who can afford it often get someone to design and make their clothing. Such clothing is called custom-made (定做的 ). The person who makes it measures the customer, and then sews it so that it fits perfectly. Alterations are not needed. Custom-made clothing is largely sewn by hand. It has better quality, better material, and is of the style you have chosen. Of course, it costs much more than ready-to-wear clothing. You need to pay the difference for the special fitting and better skill that you are receiving. This often means that you spend double or more than you would for a ready-made garment (衣服 ) . Custom-made clothing is not always that much better than ready-made clothing. It costs more partly because only one garment has been made, just for you. Companies that produce ready-made products make thousands of garments at a time. This means they can buy large quantities of material. Workers cut each size by the hundreds. Companies work out ways to make the garments by machine quickly and pay workers according to their skill. Thus they can sell the finished products at a low price while still making money. Most of the clothing sold in the United States is made in this way. Customers gain from the lower prices which are made possible by mass production (批量生產(chǎn) ) . It may or may not give them high quality. 63. We can learn from the passage that custom-made clothing is _. A. specially made B. fashionably designed C. chosen by few people D. made with difficulties 64. Which of the following is true about ready-made clothing? A. It is of poor quality. B. It suits all people. C. It takes more time to make it. D. It is labor-saving to make it. 65. Which of the following is not mentioned? A. The writer is explaining why custom-made clothing costs more. B. The writer is showing the advantages of mass production. C. The writer is telling readers not to buy custom-made clothing. D.
