IwasabletocommunicatewellwithforeigncustomersaftertwoyearsofEnglishstudy.ButIstartedtofeelthat,inthelongrun,havingalimitedknowledgeofEnglishwasnotenoughtomakemybusinesssuccessful.Iknewthatonlyawell-roundededucationcouldguaranteemysuccessinthefuture.
WhenIwaseighteen,Ihadtomakeadecisiontocontinuedoingbusinessorgobacktoschool.Therewasoneobstaclekeepingmefromgettinganadvancededucation.Ihadonlycompletedelementaryschooluptothatpoint.Ithenwentbacktoseniorhighschoolafterfourmonthsoftutoringindifferentsubjects.BeingatschoolforthefirsttimeaftersomanyyearswassomewhatembarrassingbecausemyclassmateswereatleasttwoorthreeyearsyoungerthanI.Iconcludedthatmyagedidnotmatter.Theimportantthingwasgettingintocollege.

Goodmorning,everyone!Thisweek,wearegoingtolearnanewtopic——theAimsofEducation.DifferfromWhitehead’sidea;Ithinktheaimofeducationistohelppeopleformalifelonglearningconsciousness.Inmyeyes,educationisnotanend,butameanstoanend.Inotherwords,wedonoteducatechildrenonlyforteachingthemknowledgebuttohelpthemformalifelonglearningconsciousness.
Wecanseethat,aseducationappeared,theaimofithasalwaysbeenahottopictohumanbeings,especiallythegreatthinkers.Theirideastowardstheaimofeducationreflecttheeducationalchangesinhumansociety.Thatistosaytheaimofeducationisnotstatic.InancientGreek,Aristotlethoughtthat“Educationmustaimatthedevelopmentofthefullpotentialitiesofeachman”.Later,itdevelopedintotheideaoftrainingyoungpeopletobewell-educatedgentlemenorcitizensinHenryNewman’sworkTheIdeaofaUniversity.
Asthesocietydevelops,theaimofeducationhastakeninnewmeaningsandimplicationstoeducateandtrainpeopletobeall-roundlycultivatedpersons.Toachievethisgoal,onehastospendhiswholelifetolearn.However,intheusualcasepeoplejustspendsomeyearsonstudyinschoolsoruniversities.Aftertheyleaveschool,theyseldompickupbooks.Nowthegovernmentisadvocatingbuildinga“l(fā)earningsociety”.Itprovidespeoplechancestodosomecontinuouslearninginotherschoolsbesidestheformalones,likenightschools.
Infact,theideathateducationshouldbethroughoutaperson’slifehasbeenexistingforalongtime.InChina,itcanbetracedfurtherbackto“theAnalectsofConfucius”.Confuciussaid,“Ifsomeyearswereaddedtomylife,IwouldgivefiftytothestudyoftheYi,andthenImightcomebewithoutgreatfaults”.Thisindicateshisideaoflifelonglearning.Besides,somefamouswesternphilosophersalsoheldtheideathatindividualeducationshouldbeacontinuousprocess.Forexample,thegreatthinkerAristotleclaimedthat“Educationisthebestprovisionforthejourneytooldage”.Theseclaimsaboveshowthatthosegreateducatorstakeeducationasalongtermtask.
Unfortunately,thetimethatpeoplespendinschoolsoruniversitiesislimited,soistheknowledgetheycanlearnintheformalschooling.Asaresult,itissignificantforteachertopromotelearnerautonomyandguidestudentstoformalifelonglearningconsciousnessinschool.Butusuallypeopledonottakeitseriousuntiltheyleaveschool.Iwouldliketotakemyeldercousinasanexample.
